Mourning the Passing and Celebrating the Life of a Beloved Knight: Brother Charles Slattery
Memorial Mass & Reception
Thursday, April 25th @ 6:00pm

STMC Fine Arts Wing (Band Room)
at St Thomas More Collegiate

Kindly RSVP to jen.jayme@stmc.bc.ca

It is with great sadness that we mourn the quiet passing of STMC Hall of Fame member Brother Charles Slattery on February 27th, in a nursing home in Newfoundland.

"Slats" taught at STMC in the 1960's and was Principal from 1972-78.  He had a tremendous influence on the lives of many who attended STM back then. As one alumnus remarked "Slats was the first teacher I had who really made me think, and not just regurgitate information."

As we mourn his loss, we celebrate his spirit, which still infuses the STMC community so many years later. Slats challenged all Knights to strive for excellence, but be humble in victory, and dignified in defeat. He imbued STMC with the teachings of Blessed Edmund Rice and the seeds he helped plant are still very much in evidence today.

"Slats' Seats" Bleachers in the New Gym

Some Knights are initiating a drive to name Donate Now Through CanadaHelps.org!the bleachers in the new gym "Slats' Seats," in memory of Bro Slattery.  One of those alumni has offered to match any gifts we receive in memory of Slats, up to half the cost of the bleachers.  Slats would have loved that.  More info is forthcoming.  So "Keep it in the hopper and smoke it over!"  To learn more about the "Slats' Seats" drive contact Jen Jayme at (604) 521-1801 ext 131 or jen.jayme@stmc.bc.ca, or click the Donate Now button to give online now.

Hopefully you can attend the Memorial Mass and Reception for Brother Slattery on Thursday, April 25th at 6pm, at STMC and share some memories, visit with old friends and see all the new construction at the school. (Please RSVP to jen.jayme@stmc.bc.ca

Grant eternal rest unto Bro Slattery, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the soul of our faithful departed friend, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The 14th Annual Greater Knight Open Golf Tourney will take place on

June 1st at the Golden Eagle Golf Club in Pitt Meadows. It is a sold  out event each year so sign up quickly. You can download the forms for entry, prize donations or hole sponsorships by going to The GKO Page

Last year through events like the GKO, St. Thomas More Collegiate's Alumni Association was able to contribute over $15,000.00 to the school. $5,000.00 went to support the building of the StanJean Centre which is very close to completion. We were also able to support our highly successful sports teams and hand out $2,400.00 to our graduating seniors through our Knights of Old Scholarship fund.

This year our goal is to make an even greater contribution to the gym building fund to aid with all of the incidental costs incurred with the construction of our new gym and to help us move on to Phase 3, the installation of our turf field.

The current STMC students fully appreciate the support they receive through the generosity of our alumni. We are making a positive difference to their STMC experience. Come on out to the GKO and meet old friends, swing some clubs and support St. Thomas More Collegiate at the same time.

Thanks so much! Hope to see you on June 1st.

Ways you can help.

Knight

Alumni are always coming back to share their talents and gifts with our current students as coaches and mentors.  For example, Jen Shelnutt has put together an alumni speaker series.  These grads have been speaking to Mr. Mitchell's Leadership class.  There are all sorts of ways you can help out.

Here are two annual events that could always use some help:

Chancellor Speech Contest
April 11th
We need alumni judges each year.

Career Knight
April 16th
We are in the process of finalizing our list of presenters.  If you love your career and want to tell our students about it, we would love to have you.

Don't be shy.  If you want to help out contact me!

STMC alumnus, former coach and Hall of Fame member Rich Goulet ('64) was awarded the prestigious "Prime Minister's Volunteer Award" for over 40 years of coaching and service. Rich generously named STMC as the recipient of the $5,000 grant that comes with the award. On March 11th, a ceremony was held in a meeting room inside our new StanJean Centre. In attendance was MP Randy Kamp and several of the Knights of Old that Rich coached during his STMC years.

Rich was a member of STMC's first graduating class. He returned in the 1970's and coached the Knights to perhaps their most successful run of success on the hardwood. In the 1973-74 the Knights went to the BC Basketball Championships at the Pacific Coliseum where they finished 6th and followed that up with back-to-back Single A Provincial Championships in 1975 and 1976 before returning to the Coliseum in 1978 where they finished 6th in the province. Rich then moved on to Pitt Meadows where he built that program into a consistent top performer at the provincial level.

It was awesome to see so many Knights of Old in attendance. Congratulations to Rich and thanks for thinking of STMC when it came to awarding the grant.  To see more photos of the event go to . . .

A View from Inside

Capo Construction and all the sub-contractors have done an absolutely fantastic job and the project is meeting deadline after deadline.  One of the last things to be done is the gym floor and all the hardwood was delivered last week.

THERE IS STILL A REMOTE POSSIBILITY THAT THE ALUMNI

B-BALL TOURNEY COULD TAKE PLACE IN JUNE OR LATER.  WE SHOULD KNOW WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.  I KNOW SOME OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY BEEN TRAINING OVERSEAS IN EUROPE AND RUSSIA, BUT LIKE THE NHL THERE WILL  BE A SHORT TRAINING CAMP BEFORE THE TOURNEY BEGINS.  STAY TUNED!

If you have any questions regarding the construction plans for the gym, field or the campaign itself, please feel free to contact

Now that I am on Facebook (I have 1450 friends don't you know), I am aware of so many happenings in the lives of the Knights of Old. It is very cool. Various Knights are earning degrees, getting jobs, getting married and having children on almost a daily basis. Nobody has done all of that on one day because that would be newsworthy. We want to share that information even more effectively. If there is a news item that you would like the general community to know about, you can always post it on the St Thomas More Collegiate Facebook Group, which is the current school site.  If you have news that you think would be relevant only to the Knights of Old, you can post it on the STMC Alumni Facebook Group.

We now have a TV weatherman in

Calgary (Jordan  Witzel '03) and now Yvonne Schalle ('03) is forecasting the weather for Global locally. Karen Jouhal ('02) is a producer on Global's new 24 Hour News Channel called BC1 . With that many media connections and all the clean living I do, it should be good for at least a couple of snow days in the future. Remember praying for those days when you were young! Good Times.

Tamis
John Tamis, his wife Linda, son Craig

Back in the 1970's, a number of Knights used to commute in from Surrey using the Pacific Stage Lines. (No BC Transit or Skytrain back then.) I was one of those Surreyites. Some Knights came from the farming community of Cloverdale. John Tamis ('76) was one of those Knights. Inspired by his family, John took up dairy farming right after high school and obviously is very good at it, establishing Lindrian Holsteins. John was recently given the title of Master Breeder by Holstein Canada. It is so cool to see a Knight enjoy such success at something which is a passion and not just a career. Congrats to John and his family.

Retreats:  An STMC Tradition

Retreat
Grade 12's at Camp Luther

Knights of Old will be happy to know that the senior retreat program is alive and well at the school thanks to the support of the alumni who volunteer as chaperones. We could not continue to offer these programs without their help.

Bill Elliott '92 (Father of Dominic '12 and Liam '14) , Alex Mercado '92 (Father of Bella '13, Jordan '13, Alina '16) and Adam Grossi ('06) were at the Grade 11 retreat. While at the grade 12 retreat at Camp Luther Mrs. Purss (mother of Mariah ('09), Joanna Boyd ('04) and Jared Power ('04) volunteered as small group leaders.
