FRESHMAN RETREAT
The Class of 2026 kicked off the school year with their retreat on September 1st. Mrs. Lower, Director of Campus Ministry, and many volunteers did a great job of helping the new freshman transition into high school. They enjoyed a day that started with breakfast and included games, mentoring, and mass.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Last year, Lilly Visser’s ’23 art portfolio included her painting of the Cardinal Newman tower which was on display at several events. The acrylic painting is now hanging in the President’s office.
ALUMNI Spotlight
Claire Davis '13

Claire, a graduate of Cardinal Newman’s IB program, recently completed her Master’s in Art History and Archaeology at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) and is now starting the Ph.D. program at the IFA studying Ancient Roman Art.
This summer Claire participated in the IFA and Oxford University’s joint excavation at Aphrodisias in Turkey. Aphrodisias has been excavated by NYU since 1961 and is one of the best preserved Roman-period cities in ancient Caria, located in southwest Turkey. The city was famous in antiquity for its marble sculptors and its sanctuary to Aphrodite.
“During my nine-week stay in Turkey, I was part of a team cleaning and excavating a late antique mansion, the House of Kybele. I wrote my Master’s thesis on domestic architecture and décor in Roman Asia Minor in the 2nd- 4th century CE, so this excavation site was especially relevant to my previous research and future dissertation work. Parts of the house were excavated in campaigns in the 1960s and 1980s, so much of my work involved cleaning and documenting the exposed sections of the house and recording new finds there. The mansion was not completely uncovered in the two previous campaigns, so we also opened up new excavation areas, digging down from the current ground level to locate more rooms and understand the entire layout of the house. Good excavation information is paramount when taking a sociocultural approach to the art and artifacts of the ancient world, and I was lucky to gain hands-on experience at this critical first stage of investigation.”

The excavation at Aphrodisias and the House of Kybele specifically was featured in the Turkish press: The article can be found here.
