Our Founders Day speaker was Captain Dustin Homan '10, a graduate of West Point and son of Mr. Jim Homan '74. Following are reflections about the presentation from alumnus David Urbanski '89, who had been a student and colleague of Mr. Jim Homan and one of Dustin's teachers.
It was such a joy for me to be standing at the top of the hill in front of Founders Hall on Friday morning, hearing Dustin Homan’s thoughts about Founders Day. The weather was beautiful, the campus was beautiful, and Dustin’s message was pretty beautiful too. I had the privilege of being one of his teachers in Middle School, and he really did us proud. He gave us some new ways of thinking about how to apply all of the great things we’re learning here. One of the things I loved the most about his talk was this: just like his dad would often do (Mr. Jim Homan, long-time Middle School teacher), Dustin showed us that a genuine use of intellect is not dry or boring. It has life. It’s busy doing really cool stuff. It’s breathing, dancing, and giving. It’s looking for things to be amazed at and searching for things to fall in love with. Bill Smeeth, the first Head of Brookfield Academy, would say that you can often hear laughter coming from our classrooms. Thanks, Dustin, for helping us to remember what those Five Stars are really all about.
