A New Alumni Board Member!!

Valerie Shepard was a member of Ashwood's first graduating class in 1998. She attended the local public high school (Medomak Valley) and Mount Holyoke College, where she majored in French and Studio Art. Her favorite college memories include junior year studying abroad in Montpellier, France, and competing on the college's track and equestrian sports teams. Following college, Val returned to her life long passion for horses and has worked as a rider, barn manager, and instructor in both recreational and therapeutic riding programs. Currently, she is a trainer at Horses with Hope, a local program which provides training and rehabilitation to rescued horses. Val recently married her longtime sweetheart Abe Stimson '98, whom she originally met back in 5th grade at Ashwood. Together, Val and Abe love to hike, camp, and travel—most recently they renovated an old Winnebago camper and took a seven-month cross-country trip, with work exchanges on farms along the way. Both Val and Abe share a deep appreciation for the Waldorf education they received, and can vividly see the many ways in which it shaped their lives for the better. As an incoming board member, Val is excited to help out with alumni relations and looks forward to taking part in school events.

What are you up to these days?

Sarah Miller (2002): I just moved back to the states after three years in Jordan, where I had been learning Arabic and working with an organization focused on improving the quality of education in disadvantaged areas of the country. I'm planning to go back to school this fall to pursue my doctorate in psychology in Boston. In the meantime, I'm enjoying being back in New England, being close to the ocean, and reconnecting with friends and family!

Fiona Boyd (2008): I'm currently living in Boston and working for an early music ensemble! I'm planning to spend the summer traveling and enjoying summer in Maine before I head into a doctoral program in ethnomusicology in the fall. As I continue my studies, I think back on my experience at Ashwood and feel so grateful to have gone to school there!

Isaiah Doble (2017): I am currently a sophomore in Camden Hills Regional High School, and I am thoroughly enjoying the academic rigor and large diversity of offerings within the school's system. In addition to engaging with the school's courses with enthusiasm, I am also able to pursue my passion in the performing arts, in which I fully credit my four years of Ashwood for both its creation and development. In my high school's last musical, I was cast as a lead performer and had the time of my life working with my wonderful peers and directors. I am also participating in the school's wonderful music program by being in the CHRHS Chamber Singers. I continue to have the privilege to be a student in Kinetic Energy Alive Dance Productions, and we will have our annual performance in early April. I am also excited to share that I will be serving as a Student Thespian Officer in the upcoming Northeastern Theatre Festival this coming year. I truly feel that Ashwood provided be with both the confidence and the experience to fully prepare me for what high school has to offer. Ashwood has enabled me to take full advantage of my high school's academics and extra-curriculars that allow me to do what I love. I am forever grateful for my learning experience in Ashwood Waldorf School.
