A Message from the Alumni Office
Another school year has concluded at Saint Joseph High School and the sixty-ninth graduating class of seniors have received their diplomas. The Class of 2023 endured a freshman year interrupted by COVID, numerous daily schedule changes, virtual learning days, mask-wearing, and staggered dismissals during their Saint Joe years in order to achieve their goal of graduation. They now have joined the ranks of thousands of Saint Joe alumni who carry out the mission of serving God, the Church, and the World. Please keep them in your prayers as they take the next steps in their life journeys. The intentions of all alumni are remembered in every Prayer Corner during the school year and deceased alumni are remembered at the November and June Alumni Memorial Masses.
It will be a busy summer for reunions with the Classes of 1963, 1973 and 1983 staging events to reconnect and reminisce with classmates. Contact information for those reunions can be found elsewhere in this issue of Alumni Soundings and on the Saint Joe website. The Alumni Office wants to stay in touch so look for the next issue of Focus magazine to arrive in your mailboxes in the next few weeks. Also, we will continue to send Alumni Soundings during the summer months.
Wishing you a summer of relaxation, rejuvenation, and good health.

Leo and Virginia Tschechtelin Memorial Scholarship
Jim Tschechtelin '61, and his family, have made a lasting impact in our community for over 50 years. Jim's late mother Virginia, passed away in 1967. To honor his mother's love for education, Jim and his wife, Susan, created a memorial scholarship to be awarded to an 8th grade student at Saint Joseph Grade School, that would be used to cover the cost of tuition to Saint Joseph High School. The first scholarship was awarded in 1968. Each year during the first part of May, 8th grade students are asked to nominate three students for the scholarship. This is done by secret ballot. The recipient of the scholarship must meet the following criteria: willing to help others, make a sincere effort to do his/her best in class work, are kind and patient with others, and set a good example for fellow classmates. The Leo and Virginia Tschechtelin Memorial Scholarship has been awarded for the past 56 years. The last recipient to receive the scholarship was Jacob Hix, who received the award this past May. Pictured is Jim (left) and his best friend from Saint Joe, Don Sieg '61. Don still lives in South Bend. They both recently visited campus for the first time!

Happy 50th Anniversary of Ordination to Fr. Fitz '65
Saint Joseph High School wishes Fr. Robert J. Fitzpatrick '65 a happy 50th Anniversary of Ordination to the priesthood. Fr. Fitz currently serves at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Lake Saint Croix Beach, Minnesota. Fr. Fitz graduated from Saint Joe in 1965. In the aftermath of Studebaker closing, the uncertainty of where his family would end up, and his desire to enter seminary formation, he applied to and was accepted to the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis. After four years of college and four years of theology, he was ordained on June 2, 1973. He attended the 10th and 25th Class of '65 reunions in South Bend.
He served in parishes in the Archdiocese for 45 years and "retired" in 2018 at age 70. He continues to help out in parishes and on January 30 of this year was asked to step into a parish due to a pastor having to step down for health reasons. He hopes to return to "retired and helping out" status on July 1 when a new pastor takes over.
