Message from Henry Chandler, Alumni Coordinator
Welcome to the first edition of Alumni Soundings for 2022-2023! The new school year is in full swing and it is wonderful to have students back in the halls after the vacation period. The absence of students in the summer did not mean that the building was vacant. Summer camps, Notre Dame's ACE program summer school, class reunions, and planning meetings for the new school year kept the staff busy.

Organization for reunions in 2023 are already underway and two alumni events are fast approaching. Friday, September 23 is Fall Homecoming with the varsity football game versus Elkhart as the backdrop to activities detailed below. On Tuesday, October 4, the 1972 Girls Volleyball State Championship team will be recognized in a ceremony before
the 7:00 p.m. varsity match versus Elkhart. The 1972 team was the first IHSAA-recognized state champion team in Saint Joe history and the first IHSAA-recognized state champion team in volleyball. Please mark your calendars for these events.

The intentions of Saint Joe alumni are included in each edition of the Saint Joe Prayer Corner and deceased alumni are remembered at the Alumni Memorial Masses in June and November. The date of the November Mass will be announced in the next edition of Alumni Soundings. Please keep the faculty, staff, administration, and students of Saint Joseph High School in your prayers as we embark on this new academic year.

Sincerely,
Henry Chandler, '67
Alumni Coordinator

Fulbright Awarded to Frank LaCopo '12

Frank Lacopo,'12 has been awarded a Fulbright to complete archival research for his doctoral dissertation on 16th- and 17th-Century Italian history. Frank is studying religious diversity and conversion in the Papal States.

Specifically, Frank will examine the migration of non-Catholics across Europe and the Mediterranean into the Papal States, and how this movement complicated the popes' efforts to promote and enforce Catholicism as the state religion in their territory. Frank will conduct research of the Vatican Apostolic Archive, the Archive of the Roman Vicariate, the central archives of the Jesuit Order, and the state archives in Rome and the Adriatic port town of Ancona.

While conducting prior research, Frank found a record dating back to 1617, documenting a woman's intent to convert to Catholicism (photo provided by Frank Lacopo, upper right). He later found the woman's baptismal record at the Archive of the Roman Vicariate.
Burn Boot Camp Founders, Andy '98 and Mandy Kinnucan
Local alumni can visit a new gym in Granger, founded by Saint Joe alumnus Andy Kinnucan '98 and his wife, Mandy. As parents of a young family, the Kinnucans understand that a primary obstacle to working out as a parent is finding childcare.

Enter Burn Boot Camp, a national fitness gym that believes in providing childcare as part of its services to members. The mission of Burn Boot Camp spoke to the Kinnucans, who decided to open a franchise in Michiana.

The gym already has over 100 members, and welcomes children as young as eight weeks old through age 12. When members show up for their workouts, they are enthusiastically greeted with a high five. It is no surprise then, that their motto is "High fives and good vibes!"

Saint Joe Alumni in Civic Affairs

It is no secret that Saint Joseph High School alumni are committed to service, or that many seek to make a difference through civic engagement.

Though the approach varies by graduate, it is a source of pride for Saint Joe that so many alumni engage in service for the common good. Several South Bend mayors, including the current mayor, James Mueller '00, have been Saint Joe graduates.

Recently we received updates about alumni running for public office across the U.S., including: Angela Angel '97 (4th district congressional candidate in state of Maryland); Heidi Beidinger '84 (candidate for Indiana District 15 state representative); and Eric Nowicki '07 (District 65 candidate for Missouri House of Representatives).

Finally, longtime Saint Joseph County Commissioner, Andy Kostielney '85, (pictured above, right) has accepted a position on the airport authority board of the South Bend International Airport. Though he resigns from service as a commissioner, he will continue to be of service to the county through this new role. Situated in the county as we are, Saint Joseph High School is grateful for Andy's thoughtful leadership throughout his time as commissioner.
