LaTonya Hawkes

LaTonya Hawkes, a Brunswick High School graduate, completed Southside Virginia Community College's Phlebotomy Certification Program in the spring of 2019. The program trains students to perform phlebotomist duties through a combination of classroom lectures, labs, and clinical rotations. It is one of SVCC's Workforce Development "Fast-Track" course offerings, designed for those Southside residents who need short-term training resulting in an industry-recognized credential, and leading directly to employment.

After completing the program, LaTonya worked with an SVCC Career Coach who assisted her with job applications. She is now employed by Fauquier Hospital as a Phlebotomist. She has discovered a love for pathology and plans to return to school to become a Medical Technologist.

LaTonya urges current and potential students, "When it seems hard and never-ending, don't give up. Continue to push through. It is worth it and you will feel so accomplished."
