International Alumni Spotlight:

Amirita Tipper '17

DSU Bachelor of Commercial Aviation

with a focus on Airport Management

Maybe it was destiny that Amirita Tipper '17 would find her way into aviation. After all, her hometown, Nanton, Alberta, Canada (population 2,167), is home to the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, which houses one of only four operational, World War-II era Lancaster FM159s left in the world and proudly showcases Canada's aviation history.

While at Delta State, Ami excelled in the classroom, aquatics center, and airport. Her two-year internship at the Cleveland Municipal Airport provided valuable on-the-job airport management experience. Additionally, she captained the 2015-2016 Lady Statesmen swim team and earned New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference All-Academic Team honors. At the 2015 NCAA Division II Nationals, she earned NCAA All-American (200-Medley Relay, 400-Medley Relay) titles.

Today, as a professional in aviation, Ami credits the well-rounded education she received at Delta State as vital preparation for post-college life.

"I would say DSU prepared me through the swim team and pursuing a goal with diligence and accountability. There was a lot of mornings at 4 AM where it was tough to wake up and jump in the cold water, but being a part of a university atmosphere as a student-athlete helped me to balance athletics and academics, as well as learning how to keep showing up when things get hard. I also think I learned that it's OK to fail a lot, but to continue with humbleness and drive to achieve your goals. I also really have to thank the Outdoor Rec department and the [three] trips I went on, because when I had to return to Canada, I decided to drive across the west coast and because I learned how to camp, cook, and explore, it really made that trip possible and gave me skills for life. I also learned to snowboard in Tennessee which then helped out with a few jobs in Canmore [Canada], as well as still snowboarding today! I also just completed a 70.3 Iron Man, and I have swimming to thank for getting through the first part of it. By also getting my degree in aviation, it led me to work in the Air Show industry, which is a very small niche part of aviation!"

Why did you choose to attend Delta State?

I chose to come to Delta State because I was looking for a university that had both a competitive swim program as well as an aviation program, which there are not too many of those in the US. My sister Melia was already attending DSU when I chose to come as well.

What have you been doing since you graduated from DSU?

It’s been a wild ride! After I graduated, I worked at the Gulfport airport on the coast of Mississippi for a year and went to get my work visa. I didn't receive it, so I ended up coming back to Canada and moving to Canmore, Alberta, for four years to experience life in the mountains around Banff National Park. Then, I bought a 30-foot motorhome to try travelling around for six months. Once winter hit, I moved to Leduc, Alberta, where my mom lives.

In 2021, I started my own business called Amirita Tipper Design Studios and pursued marketing for airshows and various other industries, and now it’s turned into a successful full-time endeavour. I've worked with six different airshows and many small business owners, and I attend an international convention for air shows every year in Las Vegas. I am loving having the freedom to be my own boss and make my own schedule!

My sister [Melia] went on to become a pilot for American Airlines, and so I get to fly on her benefits, which leads me to just be travelling all the time! I also have been involved in CrossFit since 2017 and currently coach with my L1 at CrossFit Leduc.

What’s a favorite DSU memory?

I was home-schooled growing up, so honestly, my favourite memory was just getting to experience the closeness of a family with the swim team. I had never trained with 40 other athletes day in and day out before coming to Delta State, and I really just felt welcomed immediately. The international department, Clint Johnson at the Cleveland Airport, the Outdoor Rec program, as well as the Hudson family, really took me in and set me up for success, and made Cleveland feel like a home, even being so far away from family.

Anything you would like to share?

Thanks for selecting me to take part in the alumni spotlight! I love hearing what my peers are up to, and I think everyone figures this out eventually, but Cleveland really becomes a home once you get involved in the community, so thank you to DSU for providing me with a second home and great University memories!

Delta State University student Kiersten Bible, a flight operations major from Batesville, has been selected as a recipient of a scholarship from the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange to study Polish language and culture at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) in Lublin, Poland, for four weeks during summer 2025.

"I applied to KUL’s program because I’m really hoping to experience what the culture in Poland is like,” said Bible. “I’ve been studying Polish independently, so this felt like the best way to immerse myself. I’m studying to be a pilot, and having another language under your belt can always help. Also, I really like traveling.”
