Julian Forbes (Class of 2019)

A graduate of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School went on to attend Howard University, where he studied Computer Science and graduated in 2024. During his time at Howard, he founded the Howard Men’s Lacrosse Club and later established Stampede Lacrosse, a nonprofit dedicated to building and sustaining lacrosse programs at HBCUs while developing leadership and community impact.

We caught up with Julian to reflect on his journey and the mission behind his work.

How did lacrosse first become part of your story?

Julian shared that his introduction to lacrosse happened unexpectedly at a Manhattan street fair. “I picked up the stick, took a shot, and had no idea that moment would completely redirect my life.” That curiosity led him to continue playing through middle school and ultimately drew him to Loughlin, where the sport became a defining part of his growth.

What lessons stayed with you from your time at Loughlin?

One of the most pivotal moments came when Julian did not initially make the lacrosse team. “That rejection hurt, but it clarified something… if I wanted to grow, I had to become more disciplined.” He went on to make the team the following year and later became captain, an experience that shaped his approach to leadership and perseverance.

What inspired you to start Stampede Lacrosse?

Julian shared that Stampede started because he could no longer ignore the reality that lacrosse remains structurally out of reach for many students in underrepresented communities. He explained that they chose to begin with HBCU campuses because expanding the future of the sport requires investing in institutions and communities that have historically been left out of its access, visibility, and infrastructure.

What do you hope young people take away from your story?

Julian emphasizes the importance of initiative and purpose. “You do not have to wait for the perfect opportunity…sometimes the most meaningful growth happens when you decide to build the thing you wish existed.”
