Father Joseph Callahan ’75 is grateful for the academic and faith formation received at St. Mary School Elyria and ECHS. He describes the lay faculty, Sisters of Notre Dame, and Fathers of St. Joseph as “sterling people” whose personal interest in their students and professional standards provided him with a foundation for vocational discernment and further studies. He mentions Señorita Bradesca, Mrs. Hedy Fye, Father Gaetano (whom he remembers saying to him his senior year: “don’t rule out going to the seminary”), and Sister Laboure (“who instilled in us a love of reading and a passion for writing properly”) as examples.

Although Bernard attended public school from K-8, his family knew that Elyria Catholic would provide a better academic foundation and a stronger disciplinary environment for him when it came time to attend high school. His parents unilaterally told him, “You are going to EC and you have to pay for it!” Bernard paid for his EC education by working as a caddy at Elyria Country Club.

During his time at Elyria Catholic, Erik Janas ‘89 played soccer, served as the class treasurer, wrote for the Challenge newspaper, assisted in reconvening the chess club, and made some wonderful friends whom he is still in contact with today. However, when asked what he remembers most about his EC experiences, Erik first cites the “quality of education” he received. Erik graduated from the University of Dayton where he earned a B.A. in Economics and a minor in English literature.

Karri Hwang, mother of Jakob Hwang ‘18, awarded the Jakob Hwang Memorial Scholarship to Maddyn Corcoran ‘23 on May 5, 2022 just after the school celebrated Mary at its annual May Crowning prayer service. Jakob was known for his infectious smile, positive attitude, and complete trust and faith in God’s plan.

EC Soccer Alumni, it’s almost that time again! The Annual Alumni Soccer Game is just around the corner. We look forward to seeing past and current players on Saturday, July 30 at Dan Reaser Stadium!
