No-Cost CLE Seminar Covering Family Court Appeals on Charleston Law Campus - Friday, March 20

All alumni are invited to attend a no-cost CLE seminar to be held on the Charleston School of Law campus on Friday, March 20, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Greg Forman will present, “Why Family Court Attorneys Should Do Appeals." 1.5 hours of South Carolina CLE credit have been approved.

If you are interested in attending the seminar, please RSVP and provide your South Carolina Bar number to Michael Abro at [email protected] , no later than Friday, March 13.

On Friday, March 27 , a no-cost CLE seminar will be held on the Charleston Law campus. This seminar will provide training on HeinOnline, Bloomberg, and Fast Case. Additional details will follow.

Would you like to serve as a class representative?

We are seeking alumni interested in serving as a class representative of their graduating class. Class representatives will reach out to their classmates a couple of times each year to request professional and personal updates and will share with their classmates exciting news provided by the law school. New Alumni Resources Available!

New “How To” videos for the legal professional now available on the resources that follow:

Weslaw Edge:  Viewers will learn how to develop searching using both natural and Boolean search techniques, how to navigate and use basic features such as print, filter, and creating alerts as well as how to run a party name and citation search.
                                                                                                                                      
Lexis Advanced:  Viewers will discover the 5 ways to locate resources using Lexis Advanced as well as how to shepardize and the 4 things to look for as well as how to conduct a name and citation search.
 
HeinOnline:  Viewers will learn how to conduct both a simple and complex search, locate resources as well as how to print and download results, how to run a citation search and how to adjust the analytic algorithm to more accurately locate what you are seeking.

Reminder: Additional Technology in Conference Room 104 in Sol Blatt Jr. Law Library Available for Alumni Use and Room 105 is Available
 
Room 104 in the library continues to be available as a conference room for alumni. There is a desk, conference room table that seats six with accompanying chairs, two bookcases, a large whiteboard, and television. Alumni with a laptop have web conferencing capability as well as the ability to practice courtroom technology. The room is on the school’s wireless network, so those reserving the room will need to request the wireless code from the IT department.
In addition, room 105 in the library is available for alumni use. There is a table and chairs as well as a large screen monitor/TV, DVD player and computer hookups.
Alumni can reserve these rooms online 48 hours in advance for up to three hours via the study room reservation system @  http://www.charlestonlaw.libcal.com/booking/conf_rooms .

Alumni Association Regional Chapter News

The leaders of the regional chapters of the Alumni Association are hosting gatherings. Additional details regarding participating regional chapters and locations will follow. If you would like to organize a gathering in your area, contact Michael Abro at [email protected] or 843.377.4058.

Requesting an Official Transcript

You must request official transcripts through the National Student Clearinghouse . Once requested, please allow two to three business days for your transcript to be processed. Questions regarding transcripts should be directed to the Office of the Registrar .

Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services has a number of domestic and probate law cases that need direct representation services. If you are willing to serve as counsel for an indigent client or act as guardian ad litem​, please contact Executive Director Alissa Lietzow at [email protected] .
 
Animal loving alumni, please consider serving as a supervising attorney for Charleston School of Law students working with the South Carolina Bar’s Animal Law Committee on a variety of cutting-edge research projects. Reunion/Homecoming Weekend

The 10-Year Reunion for the Class of 2009 as well as the Class of 2010 was held the weekend of February 7-8. The events associated with the weekend included a Welcome Party and Reception at the Alley on Friday, February 7 and a Lowcountry Boil at Palmetto Brewing Company on Saturday, February 8. Pictures taken during the Reunion/Homecoming Weekend events will be available soon!

Alumni Luncheon in Columbia, South Carolina

On Saturday, January 25, an Alumni Luncheon was held at Gervais & Vine in Columbia.

Janet Rhodes ’08  is receiving a Leadership in Law award. For additional information on this honor,  click here .

Taylor Stair ’08  has recently become a partner in Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP. Taylor focuses his practice in the areas of construction litigation and complex commercial litigation. He represents developers, homebuilders, contractors, and owners with pre-construction, construction, and post-construction issues. Taylor has extensive experience with complex construction claims involving multifamily and single-family residential dwellings, as well as commercial properties. Additionally, he offers non-litigation support for construction clients and provides legal advice related to emerging industry issues.

The annual South Carolina Bar Convention was held in Columbia, South Carolina January 23-26, 2020. Members of the alumni community presented during the Convention. The alumni presenters included:

The Housing Authority of the City of Charleston announces that  Aris Hanchard Ferguson ’16  has joined the agency as General Counsel.

Bradon Childs '16 and Meredith Shaw '17 were married November 9, 2019 at Grace Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.

Kerry Shipman ’18  has been appointed to serve as a magistrate judge in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
