January 18th was the start date for Lady Paula DeJesus, DPM, FACFAS, FACPM, CWSP, a new clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine. A graduate of Barry University in Miami, Florida, Dr. DeJesus was the chief resident for two years during her PM&S 36 training at Wyckoff Medical Center, a four-year podiatric residency program; she is an attending at Wyckoff and is part of the residency training and development there. She is a Fellow of The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons as well as the American College of Podiatric Medicine; she is also a Certified Wound Care Specialist Physician. She replaces Danielle DesPres, DPM (‘16), who left NYCPM on January 14th.

… And Bid Farewell to Dr. Robert A. Eckles
Robert A. Eckles, DPM, MPH wants to be clear that he’s not retiring – he’s leaving NYCPM and moving to another country! A BIG difference!
After 18 years at the College (he started on March 3, 2003), Dr. Eckles is returning in April to New Zealand, where he taught and practiced from 1989 – 1997. He expects to work part-time: perhaps to practice, and do other work. His family is already in New Zealand.
After earning his MPH at the University of Pittsburgh in 1977 and his DPM at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1983, practicing in Northern California and then as Senior Lecturer at New Zealand's School of Podiatry, Dr. Eckles joined the NYCPM faculty in 2003 as assistant professor in the orthopedics/pediatric department. Dr. Talia Swartz, Daughter of NYCPM’s Dr. Mark Swartz, Honored by Mt. Sinai
Talia H. Swartz, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and Co-Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), has received the 2020 Distinguished Scholar Award from the school. Dr. Swartz’s lab at Mt. Sinai seeks to understand the “mechanisms that mediate” chronic inflammation that persists in HIV patients, even those whose viral loads are controlled.
In a soon-to-be-released video produced by ISMMS, Dr. Swartz explains that identifying the pathways could yield implications for therapeutic solutions for both HIV and COVID-19 patients. ... Read more

Plaque Honoring Dr. Maurice J. Lewi Found Upstate
A Poughkeepsie, NY resident cleaning out the debris in his basement left by the previous owner discovered a small bronze plaque of historic interest to NYCPM. The plaque commemorates a testimonial dinner that honored Maurice J. Lewi, MD, in December 1929. Measuring 2-1/4” x 3-1/2”, the plaque was produced in multiples and was likely a memento given to dinner attendees.
Dr. Lewi, a physician, educator and activist, dedicated himself to making podiatry “a recognized and dignified profession.” In 1913 he resigned his post as secretary of the (NY) State Board of Medical Examiners to become president of what is now NYCPM (then called the New York School of Chiropody). NYCPM Resident Honored with
Healthcare Hero Award
Samantha Landau, DPM (’18), MPH, chief resident of NYCPM/Metropolitan Hospital’s surgical residency program, recently received Schneps Media’s Healthcare Hero Award. The award honors frontline workers who aided COVID-19 patients; she was the only resident to receive the award. Attending the virtual awards show were her parents, both alumni: father Laurence D. Landau, DPM (’92), and stepmother Corrine E. Renne Landau, DPM (’06). Dr. Laurence Landau had been honored by the Queens Courier in December. Source: PM News

Alumnus Wins 4th Annual Ronald Soave Award
Lawrence Santi, DPM (’79), has received the fourth Ronald L. Soave, DPM Integrity and Excellence in Podiatry Award from the New York State Podiatric Medical Society (NYSPMA). Created by Corrine E. Renne Landau, DPM (’06) and by Dr. Soave (’81), who is NYCPM’s Professor and Dean of the Department of Clinical Education and Professor Department of Surgery. Dr. Santi is a past president of NYSPMA (2004 – 05) and a past president of the Kings Division. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the APMA. Source: PM News.

Dr. Jeffrey Ross Appointed to Advisory Council at URI
Jeffrey A. Ross, DPM (’79), MD, associate professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned his BS zoology/premed in 1975. He is working with both institutions on gait, diabetic foot pressure and monitoring, and remote shoe inserts and insoles.

Alumni Obituaries
Helen M. Baccash (née Zadernuk) was one of the first female graduates of the Long Island University School of Podiatry (an antecedent of NYCPM) in 1941. She died in December at age 100; she was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 31, 1919, and was a part-time resident of Riverhead, NY. Source: PM News

Jack Stewart Marquis, DPM (’73), died in late December from complications of COVID-19. He had practiced in Northport, Alabama.

Joseph Sciandra, DPM (’80), practiced in North Tonawanda, NY. He had been president of the NYSPMA from 2014 - 2015 and served on its Board of Trustees. He had also been president of the Foundation for Podiatric Medicine.

Jerry S. Silverman, DPM (’79), MBA was a cum laude graduate of NYCPM. He completed his residency at the Harris County Podiatric Medical Surgical Residency Program in Houston in 1980 and earned his MBA in 1997 from the first graduating class of UH-Clear Lake’s (Houston) MBA for Physicians Program. He was Chief of Podiatry in the department of surgery of St. Joseph’s Medical Center (Houston) from 1990-2017.
