A total of 113 M.D. degrees, 138 Ph.D. degrees, 15 master's degrees and two post-baccalaureate certificates were conferred at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine convocation on May 21.
This year's guest speaker was alumnus Robert Siliciano, M.D.'78, Ph.D.'83, co-director of the M.D.-Ph.D. program and professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The renowned researcher had some sound advice for graduates.
"I am sure that at medical school graduations across the country, students are being reminded of exciting advances and the rapid pace of change. Less obvious, but equally important, is the concept that these advances are bringing new responsibilities for you, responsibilities to ensure that the benefits that accrue from these advances fall fairly upon those in need," Siliciano said to graduates.
The ceremony also included remarks from student speakers Catherine Colaianni, M.D. and Alexis Norris, Ph.D.
"The most exciting thing to me about our graduation today is that we are now officially a part of the profession and the conversation, and because we have a part, we have a voice and a responsibility towards shaping its future. I'm sure we're going to shape its future in a lot of different ways," said Colaianni, who will do her otolaryngology residency at Harvard Medical School in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary next year.
"We've all made it here to graduation. We've pushed through those negative results, those negative thoughts and eventually it paid off. The experiment or analysis finally worked. The paper was accepted, and the thesis was submitted," said Norris, who obtained her Ph.D. from the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine. She will start a postdoctoral research fellowship with a joint appointment in the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins and in the Department of Neurology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.
Thirty-two student awards were given, as well as 13 teaching awards, including seven from the newly formed Johns Hopkins Institute for Educational Excellence.

School of Medicine alumnus Dorry Segev, M.D. '96, Ph.D. won the inaugural Dancing with the Hopkins Stars on May 26. Segev, associate vice chair for the department of surgery, and his partner Pamela Paulk, president of Johns Hopkins Medicine International, took home the mirror-ball trophy for best dance performance after Paulk wow'd the audience with a 10-star back flip! The dancing roster included Alan Partin, M.D. '87, Ph.D. '89, Landon King, M.D. (house staff/fellow, medicine, 1992), Michael Carducci, M.D. (fellow, endocrine oncology, 1996), Allison Agwu (fellow, medicine, 2007) and Pablo Celnik, M.D. (house staff, rehabilitation medicine, 2003). Alumnae Redonda Miller, M.D.'92 and Lisa Maragakis, M.D.'98, joined Shawn Celio and Roy Ziegelstein, M.D., M.A.C.P, on the judges panel. The event kicked off the 2015 Johns Hopkins Medicine United Way campaign, which works to end homelessness in Baltimore through affordable housing, comprehensive health care, sufficient incomes and better emergency shelters. The time and talent put forth by all 20 dancers helped raise over $52,200. You can still donate to each of the dancers by visiting hopkinsmedicine.org/unitedway/dwths. |
