Strengthening the Foundation of Gifted Education at SAA

This past month, I had the privilege of attending the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Conference in Seattle. Immersing myself in conversations with leading experts, educators, and advocates for gifted education was both inspiring and affirming. I left the conference with a renewed passion for the work we do at Science & Arts Academy and a clear vision for how we can continue to evolve as a community committed to our gifted learners.

One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of aligning all aspects of a school’s programming with a unified understanding of giftedness. This principle has shaped an exciting initiative we are launching at SAA: a custom-designed Gifted Bootcamp, developed in partnership with Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development.

Starting on January 8, during our Early Dismissal Day, all SAA staff—teachers, administrators, and support staff—will embark on this shared professional development journey. This initiative represents my deep belief that every member of our community must have the tools and insights to support the unique needs of our gifted students.

Why is this important?

As I reflected on the themes from the NAGC conference, it became clear that a unified training experience is essential for several reasons:

A Shared Understanding: Every staff member plays a vital role in shaping the student experience, from the classroom to administrative interactions. Shared training ensures that we all operate with the same foundational knowledge of gifted education.

Consistency Across the School: Gifted learners thrive when the adults around them share a cohesive approach to meeting their needs. By participating in this program together, we can ensure consistent practices and strategies across all areas of SAA.

Collaborative Strength: A common training experience builds trust and collaboration among staff, creating an environment where we innovate and solve challenges together.

A Stronger Foundation for Growth: The Gifted Bootcamp will provide the foundation for rebuilding and refining programs that align with SAA’s Philosophy of Gifted Education, ensuring that we continue to challenge and inspire our students.

This initiative is not just about enhancing individual expertise—it’s about fostering a community that is truly united in purpose. The administrative team will also be participating, reinforcing our collective commitment to the future of SAA.

Looking Ahead

I am so excited about what this means for our school. This is a critical step in fulfilling the vision I’ve shared: to ensure that every SAA staff member is equipped to support the extraordinary capacities of our gifted learners. This program will be a reference point for everything we do moving forward, helping us reimagine and rebuild programs that challenge, inspire, and support our students.

The NAGC conference reminded me of the incredible opportunity we have at SAA to shape the future for our gifted learners. I look forward to sharing our progress on this journey with you and continuing to learn and grow together as a community.
