  • At SFP/Shabbat Family Programming, 1-19-19: All 5th Grade through this year's B'nai Mitzvah students should report promptly at 9:30 a.m. to Morah Sandra Mieli Kamm and the Madrichim assisting her, to the first 3-4 rows on the Cantors side of the Sanctuary.  Rabbi Newman Kamin and Cantor Simon will be in the Main Sanctuary and look forward to seeing many 5th graders through this year's B'nai Mitzvah students on the bimah helping to lead prayers that they have been practicing all year.  All 4th Grade and younger should report promptly at 9:30 a.m. to Room 5 to Morah Lynn Washer, Ms. Diane Rosenfeld and the Madrichim assisting them.  At 10:15 a.m., Ms. Rosenfeld will bring all children 1st-4th Grades to the library. Morah Lynn Washer will move next door to Room 6 with children Kindergarten and younger and their parents.  Morah Lynn will come up with a plan with those families for when/if to join the library service, at the very least in time to attend the library SFP Torah readings.  Please note that activities on Shabbat morning for our 4th graders and younger will be on the second floor of the school building (Rooms 5 and 6) as opposed to on the first floor as it has been in the past.  Mr. Marc Nevins and I will lead Family Tefillah in the library in the lower level of the school building beginning at 10:15 a.m. and the Rabbi will come to the library to hear kids chant from the Torah scroll.  A separate email with Madrichim assignments for those who signed up to assist us with SFP will be forthcoming prior to Shabbat.  Here is a chart with the schedule for SFP, which will also be posted in key places in the synagogue this Shabbat morning:
  • We had a fantastic time with approximately 60 attendees at PJ Shabbat this past Fri Jan 11!
  • Thank you for a productive afternoon and evening of Parent Teacher Conferences yesterday.  We greatly value our partnership with SJS parents to help give our students the best education possible.
  • If you have a student in Ms. Rosenfeld's Alef/Bet (1st/2nd Grade) class, please be sure to RSVP for the class Havdalah: http://evite.me/szpkGXTTgE

(2) Please support Kira Friedel's Israel/Passion Mitzvah Project.  Here is Kira's Write-up
I am selling bracelets that will help raise money for Leket Israel! The bracelets say Healthy Food For All. Healthy Food For All means that everyone should be able to access healthy food not just junk food like chips, soda and candy. All proceeds go to Leket Israel. Bracelets cost $3.00 for one bracelet and $5.00 for two bracelets. I will be selling them during SJS.

Facts About Leket Israel

In 2004, 1.426 million people in Israel were hungry; that is 22.4% of the population of Israel. Leket Israel is one of the largest organization in Israel that feed/help the hungry. You can make sandwiches, pick fruits and vegetables and you can come to the warehouse and help move or package things up. They make over 8,000 sandwiches in a day.

HEALTHY FOOD FOR ALL!!!!

(3) Am Yisrael SJS Room Parents:
Our room parents met as a group in October and will be meeting again in March.  SJS Room Parents help connect our families within each class in various ways, as needed, throughout the year.

(4) Torah & Megillah Chanting Opportunities:
While there are many opportunities for our students and madrichim to chant from the Torah scroll, the dates that I am currently taking requests via email [email protected] or text message 847-708-1805 are:
  • Shabbat Family Programming (SFP) taking place on Shabbat mornings: Mar 16 and May 11.
  • The Purim Megillah reading is being held Wed Mar 20 in the evening.
  • Intergenerational Torah Reading on Shabbat morning Apr 27 for those interested in participating.
  • Our final opportunity for this academic year will be for Shavuot on Sun Jun 9.  On that morning we will be making some special presentations.
(5) #Partnership: Am Yisrael and Ramah
Am Yisrael has been chosen for a grant called #Partnership that will enable more of our Am Yisrael students get to my "camp alma-mater," Camp Ramah in Wisconsin.   As part of our partnership this year, we are offering a guaranteed scholarship of $1,500 to first time 4-week campers at Am Yisrael; and we have additional scholarship funds available for younger students attending the overnight or Ramah Day Camp on an as-needed basis.
