AmCham Vietnam - HCMC Weekly Newsletter
July 22nd, 2025
| | Update from the Executive Director | | Greetings from Washington! I just wrapped up my time at the AmChams of Asia Pacific Doorknock, where we met with several members of the Trump administration, Congress, and policy think tanks. We underscored the importance of U.S. businesses in Asia-Pacific, and learned more about the current administration’s perspective on trade and investment. We advocated for our members and directly informed the administration about the challenges of the uncertainty resulting from current U.S. policies. Ultimately, the lack of clarity was a consistent message from all the meetings, though the administration is laser focused on addressing the trade imbalances and demanding better market access for American goods. We are still waiting for details of the Vietnam trade deal, and USTR and the Vietnamese embassy confirmed they are working hard to finish it ASAP. I will be organizing a webinar within the next few weeks to provide more information about what we learned, so please keep a look out. | | |
Vietnam’s economy continues to demonstrate strong momentum, recording 7.5% growth in the first half of 2025. This expansion was driven by a $62 billion trade surplus with the US and a 32.6% increase in foreign direct investment. Despite lingering uncertainty over proposed U.S. tariffs of up to 20%, ongoing trade negotiations and sustained investor confidence are helping to stabilize economic outlooks.
Vietnam and the United States are celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting their evolution from wartime adversaries to comprehensive strategic partners. As part of this growing relationship, both nations are continuing to engage with each other in multiple sectors and have both stressed that they will continue to further partner.

On July 14th, Daniel J. Kritenbrink, Partner at The Asia Group and former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, met with the AmCham Board of Governors to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing Vietnam in the current economic landscape and beyond. Despite recent tariffs, there is broad consensus that Vietnam continues to be a key focal point for global investors, particularly in relative terms.
