Update from the Executive Director

Dear AmCham,

As many of you have seen, it’s been an eventful week with tariffs. On May 28, the Court of International Trade in the US ruled that an emergency law invoked by Trump did not give the president unilateral authority to impose tariffs on countries around the world, including Vietnam. However, a federal appeals court the following day ruled in favor of the Trump administration, delaying the lower court’s ruling. The next hearing in the case is on June 5, 2025, and depending on what happens, the case could eventually go to the Supreme Court. Separately, last Friday, President Trump announced that he will increase tariffs on steel imports from 25% to 50%. We at AmCham are monitoring the developments closely, and we will update our members regularly. Please contact me directly if you want to talk about how the tariffs are impacting your company, so I can relay this message to the proper stakeholders.

I would like to request your help! We are conducting a Mid-Year Market Review Survey, and it only takes 2 minutes and is available in both EN/VN. On June 19, we will release the results at a brand new style of event, where we will listen to 8 senior leaders from 8 sectors speak for 8 minutes each on how their sector has changed since January and what opportunities and challenges they see for the remainder of 2025. Register here to secure your spot, and take the survey by clicking the button below.

It’s hard to believe that U.S. Consul General Susan Burns will be finishing her post at the end of this month. She has been a wonderful friend to AmCham and the American business community, so please join us on Monday, June 16 for a Farewell Dinner in her honor.

We are grateful for her remarkable support over the past three years, and I would like to invite all our members and friends who have worked with her to help us say thank you.

To make the evening even more special, please share any photos or messages about Ms. Burns for a tribute presentation. Please register here.

Decisions that are critical to the global economy, including tax, trade, spending and national security issues, are made every day in Washington by the White House and the Congress. Each summer, the AmChams in the region take a group of members to Washington to meet top US government officials to engage in a dialog on issues affecting US trade and commerce in the Asia-Pacific area.

This year’s “Washington Doorknock” will be held from July 13-16, 2025. Doorknock delegates will be speaking firsthand with Trump Administration officials, Members of Congress, and other thought-leaders who help determine the future of US policy towards Vietnam and other countries in the region.
