On Saturday, March 21, 2026, Vietnam announced the results of its National Assembly elections, marked by a record 99.7% voter turnout and the selection of 500 deputies, with a growing share of full-time lawmakers and modest gains in diversity. The legislature’s shift toward more professional, full-time representatives is expected to strengthen policymaking and oversight, which could improve regulatory clarity and consistency—an important positive signal for businesses operating in Vietnam.
Amid global energy disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz and the escalating US–Israel–Iran conflict, Vietnam has faced sharp fuel price increases, with petrol and diesel rising by roughly 50 percent and 70 percent, respectively. In response, the government has moved to stabilize the market by diversifying import sources, boosting domestic supply, and expanding strategic fuel reserves while using fiscal tools to manage price pressures. Despite global volatility, authorities are prioritizing uninterrupted energy supply and price stability to protect economic activity. For businesses, this coordinated approach helps mitigate the risk of severe shortages and sudden cost spikes, supporting operational continuity even as external pressures remain elevated.
Next week (Thursday, April 2), AmCham will host an energy discussion next Thursday, April 2, bringing together CEOs and business leaders from across oil, solar, LNG, and the manufacturing sector to talk through what’s happening on the ground. The conversation will connect the current global volatility with Vietnam’s evolving policy landscape, including updates to the Electricity Law, DPPA framework, and the rollout of Power Development Plan VIII, and what it all means for investors and large energy users. Last week, the AmCham team visited two factories of our Members. First, we visited Fleming International, a manufacturer of room sprays, incense sticks, wax melts, hand soaps and lotions, and candles. The company exports 90% of its products to the US for major retailers. During the visit, we learned more about their operations, gained insights into business trends and evolving consumer preferences in the U.S. market, and heard about the recent opening of their new factory in the United States. Second, we visited Coca-Cola’s newest manufacturing facility in Tay Ninh—and we were truly impressed. From its LEED Gold-certified design to advanced technologies and renewable energy systems, the plant reflects a strong commitment to sustainable growth and innovation. Highlights include a rooftop solar system, biomass energy use, and an impressive ability to reuse up to 89% of water in production. | | On March 19, 2026, Mr. Travis Mitchell, Executive Director, met with an International Monetary Fund mission team led by Mr. Martin Sommer and provided an update on Vietnam’s economic outlook, including tariff negotiations, trade policy impacts, and the evolving business and labor environment. The discussion offered meaningful private sector perspectives on challenges facing exporters and financial institutions, as well as broader trends shaping investment and growth. | | |

After several meetings and behind-the-scenes efforts by AmCham and other stakeholders, the government has officially delayed the implementation of Decree 46 and Resolution 66. At the same time, regulatory authorities are required to strengthen inspections, post-audit reviews, and food safety monitoring, as well as enhance the effectiveness of state management in this area.
