While election campaigns continue in large countries such as the US, UK and France, and results in other countries have so far thrown up surprises, the global economy seems quite resilient boding well for export-oriented countries like Vietnam. Domestically, Gross Domestic Product data for the second quarter and first half of the year is expected to be released at the end of this week.
Vietnam remains on the U.S. Treasury Department’s “monitoring list” in its June 2024 report to Congress. The monitoring list is a list of major trading partners with the U.S., whose currency practices and macroeconomic policies merit attention. Seven economies, namely China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Germany are in the latest monitoring list.
Though Vietnam continues to have the third-largest goods surplus with the U.S., there isn’t persistent one-sided intervention in the FX market according to the Treasury.
The Finance and Budget Committee of Vietnam's National Assembly has proposed implementing value-added tax (VAT) on all imported goods delivered via e-commerce platforms. The committee is evaluating the draft Law on VAT, and pointed out that many countries have removed VAT waivers on low-value goods to increase budget revenue and create a fair competition environment for both domestically produced and imported products.
