AmCham Chair encourages further advancement in six key areas at 2023 Vietnam Business Forum (2023)

With the theme of “Business Community in Partnership with the Government of Vietnam in Fostering Green Growth”, the 25th edition of the Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) took place in Hanoi on March 17th and 19th. As the most prominent annual dialogue between the business community and the Government of Vietnam, the event intends to foster a favorable business environment and sustainable economic development in the country, and was attended by many of our members.

VBF’s Technical Session on March 17 included working sessions focused on the Green Economy, Sustainable Development, and Competitiveness. Working groups consisting of business community representatives exchanged proposals with Government officials.

Sunday’s High-Level session was attended by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, and featured leaders from numerous business associations, including AmCham Vietnam. Greg Testerman, Chair AmCham Vietnam, addressed the session with an important speech highlighting recent achievements in economic policy related to pandemic recovery, and advocating for further progress in six key areas:

·      Transitioning to Clean Energy
·      Unlocking the Potential of the Digital Economy
·      Health and Wellness as Key Issues for Sustainable Development
·      Streamlining Mobility for International Business Exchange
·      Harmonizing Tax and Customs Policies with International Standards
·      Creating a more Attractive, Transparent and Stable Business Environment

Business association presentations were followed by conclusions from the Technical Session, comments from Government officials, and a keynote address by Prime Minister Chinh.

AmCham Danang Update
It was a very busy week for AmCham Danang!

First we were honored to co-organize the Seminar: Rethink & Reimagine Workforce Landscape in Danang with Talentnet at the Hilton Hotel Danang on Tuesday the 14th. It was a very insightful event with a lively panel discussion on HR needs and best practices moving forward with a younger workforce coming into the market. We thank the organizer Talentnet for making this possible as well as the over 100 attendees. Human Resources and Capacity Training is one of our core pillars we are focusing on this year and it was great that we can see it kicking off in a positive way.

On the advocacy side we were honored to hold a speech at the VBA & VCCI Forum on the proposed taxation on ‘sugary beverages’ on Wednesday the 15th. We voiced our members concerns about this proposal because if this proposal is approved, both the food and beverage industry, which is struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, will face an additional financial burden. It also creates an additional financial burden for every family to pay higher prices for many common foods, in times of high inflation.

And last but for sure not least we attended the 3rd Vietnam Connect Forum 2022 ‘Breakthrough for Vietnam Central Region: Twin Green – Digital Transitions in Growth and Sustainability’ on Friday the 17th. This was a very well attended forum with great discussion from multiple provincial leaders as well as represented by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc. Special thanks to Matthew McGarvey who attended the standing panelist for an hour and a half discussion from Business Associations, Business Community and Danang, Lam Son and Hue leadership.

Also congratulations to all our members that received the Golden Dragon Award for Green Growth and Sustainable Development in 2022!
Welcome New Members
