AmCham Vietnam Weekly Update - 40th Week of 2020 - October 4th, 2020
Executive Director Update

Colleagues,

We hope you are continuing to enjoy mid-autumn festivities this weekend. Many thanks to AmCham friends for the delicious mooncakes!

COVID Update from Dr. Mason Cobb: President Trump and the First Lady's recent diagnosis of COVID-19 demonstrates just how infectious this disease is, even with the frequency of testing and other precautions available in the White House. Although Vietnam continues to do an amazing job in managing its response to COVID with no community transmission in over 60 days in HCMC and over 30 days nationwide, remember to do your part. Wash your hands frequently, wear a mask when in crowded public places, and stay home when you have a fever or feel sick. Exercise, eat right, ensure adequate Vitamin C and D (including via sunshine), get enough sleep, and schedule that flu shot now, too, to be safe!

Message from AmCham Vietnam-Da Nang Vice Chair Chris Vanloon: “Greetings from sunny Da Nang! I am so pleased to inform that all services have been back to normal for a week now and that domestic flights are picking up. People are more relaxed and going out more and more. It’s great to see! Would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to Dr. Wade Brackenbury and his team at ACC (American Chiropractic Clinic) who I had the pleasure of joining their one year anniversary of operations in Da Nang. They brought an essential service to our city and all the local and foreign participants that day had glowing testimonials from their treatment at ACC, for themselves or their relatives. We wish our partner ACC a most successful future and thank you for your commitment to Da Nang!’

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world's economy was shut down almost overnight and this closure has confronted the Vietnamese hospitality industry with an unprecedented challenge. Strategies to flatten the -19 curve such as community lockdowns, travel, and mobility restrictions, frontiers closure, led to a sharp decline in hotel occupancies and have also resulted in the temporary or definitive closure of many hospitality businesses. Today, the reopening process has slowly begun and authorities have started to ease restrictions. While the hospitality industry tries to slowly recover and to resumes operations, a lot of professionals still interrogate themselves about what will be the hospitality business in 2021.

Over the past few years, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria have become an integral part of a sustainable company’s assessment of its investment and growth.

ESG criteria are used to measure and track how a company’s operations affect, positively and negatively, the well-being of its environment, employees, suppliers, customers, and community. How a company applies ESG criteria increasingly defines its approach to leadership, management, and compliance.

In Vietnam, interest in ESG standards and their impact on growth is increasing in both the public and private sectors. The holistic integration of ESG criteria into most companies’ strategies is still at an early stage.

With this in mind, AmCham has created the new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Committee. The ESG Committee will play a role in identifying Vietnamese and global ESG standards and best practice, in promoting ESG standards locally, and in assisting AmCham members to achieve their sustainable development objectives in Vietnam.

The ESG Committee’s kickoff event is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2020.
