Beware what you post on social media. Enjoy the services available to us in Vietnam. Be willing to try new things. Beware what you post on social media, particularly if your trainer is a FB friend. My trainer was especially tough on me today. I learned it was because he saw my recent post on pies. I am grateful for the services available in Saigon, like shoe cobblers (this one across from The Norfolk on Le Thanh Ton), which have practically become extinct in our throwaway society. Finally, I encourage you to try new things and not be resistant to change. After years of living in Asia (and San Francisco before), I finally tried chicken paws, aka chicken feet. While not an immediate hit because of their gooey, chewy texture, I did like the sauce. I think it may be an acquired taste, like durian…

It was wonderful to be able to celebrate with so many AmCham members and friends at AmCham’s 2nd Annual “Giving Thanks Dinner” and 2021 AmCham CARES Awards for Covid Relief and Recovery Ceremony December 2nd at The Reverie Saigon.
Special thanks to U.S. Charge d’Affaires Marie Damour, Vietnam Fatherland Front HCMC Chairwoman Tô Thị Bích Châu, HCMC People’s Committee External Relations Office Director General Tran Phuoc Anh, Binh Duong Vietnam Fatherland Front Chairman Nguyễn Văn Lộc, and Acting Consul General Robert Greenan.
This past year has been a challenging year for Vietnam, and many of our companies and families. But strong support and partnership with the Vietnamese and U.S. governments throughout the pandemic implementing policies, donating vaccines, and conducting an impressive vaccine rollout have enabled our businesses to adjust to living safely with the virus and reopen, recover, and rebound.
Many thanks to our performers, Singers Quỳnh Hoa, Quốc Đại, and Cece Trương, who inspired us that evening - and so many frontline healthcare workers and patients during Vietnam’s 4th wave.
We are proud of, and grateful to our many AmCham member companies who demonstrated Leadership in Contributions Toward Vaccines, Medical Equipment, and Supplies; Leadership in CSR Initiatives; Leadership in International NGO Projects; and Significant Contributions to COVID Relief and Recovery.
Together, we look forward to working together to enable a resilient economic recovery and sustainable growth in Vietnam. LINK to photo album

There were thought-provoking discussions at AmCham’s Nov 30 hybrid in-person and virtual event, Improving Supply Chain Efficiency Through Women Workers’ Wellbeing”. Creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace which ensures the wellbeing of women (and all) workers is a priority of the Biden-Harris Administration and its Worker-centric Trade Policy. It is a requirement for exporting to many destinations from the USA, particularly California, to the EU, UK, and Australia. It is the right thing to do, especially now during COVID, when women and workers in Vietnam generally are more vulnerable to the lure of traffickers. And it gives businesses which invest in and empower their women workers a competitive edge! Continuing partnerships between businesses, governmental authorities, NGOs, research institutes, and international organizations are needed to enable societal change here in Vietnam and globally.
Many thanks to sponsor Pacific Links Foundation, expert speakers Acting Deputy U.S. Consul General Dorothy Mayhew, Independent Researcher and Consultant Dana Doan, Pacific Links Foundation Program Director Loan Luong, IFC East Asia and Pacific Gender Program Manager Amy Luinstra, Research Center for Employee Relations Director Dr. Do Quynh Chi, Respect Vietnam Founder and Strategic Adviser Dang Thi Hai Ha, Biti’s Sustainability Manager Giang Nguyễn, Esquel Vietnam Brands Director Hanh Do, Target Sourcing Senior Managing Director for SEA Giovanni Rojas, and The Mekong Club CEO Matt Friedman for your insights. And to our audience, including Women in Leaders Committee Co-Chair Irene Öhler and ESG Committee Co-Chair Van Ly for your thoughtful questions!

Although Vietnam’s impressive vaccine rollout has resulted in a significant drop in hospitalizations and deaths, COVID and related lockdowns caused hardship for many Vietnamese people, especially disadvantaged groups such as migrants and informal workers. In addition to contributing directly via AmCham CARES to donate medical equipment to support the Vietnamese government, we provide information about various AmCham INGO members’ COVID-19 relief programs in Vietnam, as well as links to some local NGOs vetted and supported by LIN. LINK. We are happy to highlight COVID-or other CSR-related contributions from our member companies on our social media. Please email details, including photos, to Cindy Tran.

Greetings from Da Nang and I hope you are all well. Looking forward to the upcoming holidays, we take the time this week to reflect on all the charitable donations that were made on behalf of all our members to support charitable organizations, including members OneSky and Children of Vietnam this year. Additionally it is with great pleasure to announce that we plan to host an in-person Connect & Cocktails networking reception this month, with all proceeds going to Da Nang and Central Vietnam-based NGO’s. Next week, we will update the time and date, but we welcome members and friends to join and contribute to all our great NGO partners!

We continue to receive Vietnamese government and media interest in our recent member survey on Prospects for Reopening, Recovery, and Rebound, and plan to follow up with some specific policy recommendations, particularly related to entry of foreign experts, investors, and managers. We expect to have a meeting with Binh Duong authorities the week of December 13th. We also expect to continue to focus advocacy on the new Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8), Digital Economy regulations, and Environmental Protection Regulations. The Vietnam Business Forum, originally tentatively scheduled for December 15th or 16th, now looks like it may take place in January. See Advocacy Report for more details. LINK. Please send your feedback on what is working, what issues remain, and recommended solutions to relevant Committee Chairs, advocacyaction@amchamvietnam.com, and our Manufacturing Task Force, at MFGTF@amchamvietnam.com.
