The Birthday Party on Football Saturday Controversy

I first heard about this in Knoxville. The store I was calling on did a huge birthday party celebration business. They had 3 separate party rooms and they were fully booked every Saturday...well almost every Saturday. When the Vols were playing at home, the birthday rooms sat empty.

I was recently in Oxford, Mississippi and inquired about this. I was told in general, parents did not have birthday parties on Saturdays when Ole Miss had a home game. One parent (whose comments were reflective of many) told the store manager - "I can't believe they're having a party today! Don't they know Ole Miss is playing! This is ridiculous!"

For those of us who don't live in places like Athens, Tuscaloosa, or Clemson, we've never really thought about this. I guess it's really not that big a deal, as you have the party the week before or the week after when your team is playing out of town.

The controversy arises for the parents who are not college football fans, who take the bold and controversial move of scheduling their child's party close to the day of their actual birthday - whether there's a home game or not.
