Leah Gomez Ranalli uses Amazon's Delivery Service Partner Program to Empower the Hispanic Workforce in Tuscon, Arizona

Having spent over 10 years in the healthcare industry, Leah Gomez Ranalli felt she was finally ready to strike out on her own. Growing up, she watched her dad own and operate his own small business and really admired him for being his own boss. So when Leah heard an advertisement on the radio for Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner program – an opportunity for leaders to own and operate their own package-delivery business – she knew she had to apply.

Launching her Business

Leah launched her business, HieQ Logistics, in Tucson, AZ in November 2018. She currently leads a team of 100 employees alongside her husband, a former social worker and licensed therapist. Together, they’ve cultivated a culture of empowerment, productivity, and support, which Leah cites as a big piece of their success.

Within her team, she employs many from the Hispanic community, and many of the leaders in her region are Hispanic. Leah has focused on creating a diverse team, which she credits to her own identity and background as a Hispanic woman.

A Focus on Empathetic Leadership

Leah runs her business with an eye for metrics-driven performance, but she cites people as being her number one priority. She believes that, as a leader, she’s there to serve her employees. Leah says, “We put ourselves in the shoes of our team to really approach with empathy. We don’t make decisions without knowing exactly what our drivers and team are going through. We lead with humility and we learn together. I think when you approach any problem with empathy and humility, it goes a long way with people.”
Overcoming Challenges

As a Hispanic woman, Leah has faced doubt and overcome preconceived notions related to her identity. And yet she’s overcome such prejudice to rise as a fearless and empathetic Hispanic woman leader to her employees and to her community. As such, she’s changing minds as the community evolves. She credits her dad’s influence, saying “My parents have always said to me, ‘if you want to be something, just do it.’ They brought me up that way.” Leah believes that she, alongside other strong Hispanic women, are continuing to chip away at outdated cultural identities.

When asked what her one piece of advice for the USHCC community would be, Leah answered, “Trust yourself – you know what you’re capable of.”
