Security: Hackers claim Discord breach exposed data of 5.5 million users

BleepingComputer
Discord says they will not be paying threat actors who claim to have stolen the data of 5.5 million unique users from the company's Zendesk support system instance, including government IDs and partial payment information for some people.

The company is also pushing back on claims that 2.1 million photos of government IDs were disclosed in the breach, stating that approximately 70,000 users had their government ID photos exposed.

While the attackers claim the breach occurred through Discord's Zendesk support instance, the company has not confirmed this and only described it as involving a third-party service used for customer support. Read More

Homeland Security: Emergency management has never been more indispensable

Homeland Security Today

Twelve months ago, Carrie stood before our peers with a vision, a call for bold leadership and collective strength. Since then, the world has tested that vision in every possible way. This past year reminded us of something undeniable: emergency management is not just relevant, it is indispensable.

A Year That Tested Our Profession

This year has pushed every part of our field to its limits. Long-standing programs were questioned, budgets were reduced, stretched, and sometimes misunderstood. Many of us found ourselves fighting not just for our organizations or jurisdictions, but for the very recognition of emergency management as an essential public service.

While external pressures were real, some of the hardest challenges came from within. As the landscape around us shifted, unity in our profession wavered. Disagreements deepened. Collaboration, once our greatest strength, was tested just when we needed it most. Read More

Transportation: Amazon to test its driverless Zoox vehicles on streets of DC

NBC4 Washington

Amazon announced it will test drive its robotaxis on the streets of D.C. Its self-driving vehicle, known as the Zoox, will join the Waymo vehicles already testing in the District.

Built by the company itself, Zoox vehicles have seats that face one another and doors that open on both sides. It can go forward and backward easily. It isn’t the traditional robotaxi because it's basically its own unique vehicle, not a car that is transformed into a robotaxi.

The National Mall and downtown likely are the areas where the autonomous vehicles will roll. Zoox said it specifically chose D.C. as a test market because of its complex and unique street layout with circles, diagonal avenues, and high pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Before the actual robotaxi rolls out streets will be mapped by SUVs loaded with sophisticated equipment. Read More

Human Resources: The human-machine era is here, but work culture may not be ready for it

HR Dive

The human-machine era is here, and CHROs must develop an HR-focused AI strategy to stay ahead, Gartner said in a press release Oct. 2 — but those leaders are struggling to build a culture that will enable this.

In other words, CHROs may play a key role in determining how work is shaped in years to come. Many organizations are still in an experimental phase, Gartner said, so CHROs need to be open to new ways of managing talent and workloads.

To do so, CHROs will need to create a work culture that enables employees to feel productive and engaged, but they are failing to deliver on this promise, Gartner said. July data from Gartner revealed that, of 222 CHROs surveyed, less than half said their culture drives employee performance. Read More

Business & Technology: Ways CIOs can synergize modernization and legacy infrastructure

CIO

The old approach to dealing with legacy systems was simple: rip them out and start over. These days, though, most CIOs will tell you a different story that sometimes the best path forward isn’t about replacing everything but making what you have work better.

With emerging tech multiplying at such a furious pace, some companies are getting creative about how to retrofit old technology. Sometimes the choice to keep legacy systems in place comes down to if it’s still working, why change it? But the reality is rarely that clear cut. Read More
