The Lightning Sensor

Have you ever heard the crackling of a lightning strike on your AM radio? A lightning strike has a distinct waveform that can be processed and analyzed by detector hardware and software.

Personal lightning detectors work by detecting the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) emitted by a lightning strike. By measuring the strength of the detected EMP, the device can then estimate how far away the strike was.

Through the application of electronics and software, personal lightning detectors identify storm activity within 25 miles (40 km) of your location.

The Ambient Weather lightning detector is a separate wireless device that sends strike data to the WS-2000 and WS-5000 weather station consoles, and is scheduled for release in June.
The lightning data is then integrated into the AmbientWeather.net dashboard, graphs, alerts and global lightning map:
The lightning detector map includes a strike radius around the detector, that fades as the lightning strike ages. With two detectors within about 25 miles (40 km), the lightning strike area is confirmed with two overlapping circles (think Venn Diagram).

With three detectors in a 25 mile radius, the strikes can triangulated to identify the approximate strike origin.
The lightning tile automatically appears onto your dashboard when added to the WS-2000 and WS-5000 weather stations, and includes the number of strikes today, in the last hour, last strike time, and last strike distance.

This data is then integrated into the dashboard graphs and alerts.
Introducing the WS-8480 Fan Aspirated Professional Weather Station
Ambient Weather's newest Professional Weather Station allows you to monitor your home and backyard weather conditions with the brilliant, easy-to-read high contrast reverse PMVA color display.

The enhanced Wi-Fi connectable option that enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to AmbientWeather.net and other free networks.

The WS-8480 is due in stock later this month.

Ambient Weather Dashboard 2.0 Apps Updated
Ambient Weather Dashboard App 2.0 has been released.

Version 2.0 added maps and radar images to the Android and iOS apps. It also resolves lock up and speed issues by implementing faster and smaller servers, databases, and moving the graph page off the dashboard.

We hope that you will try our app again with a fresh set of eyes, and if you like and use the app, rate it here?

We realize our customers want Dark Mode, widgets and weather alerts, and we plan on delivering them (the apps are about 2 years old, and there is still a huge list of things to add).

We believe our biggest hurdle, managing over 100,000 devices while maintaining speed and reliability, has been accomplished.

Thanks again for your patronage. It is very much appreciated!
openHAB now supported
openHAB  empowers the Smart Home. The Ambient Weather binding integrates weather station data that’s stored on the Ambient Weather online service. The binding uses Ambient Weather’s real-time API, so updates from weather stations are delivered to the binding in near real-time –  more info

A special update from a member of our  Ambient Weather Network User's Group :

Don F.

"Thanks to Alix James CEO of  Ambient Weather .

I became involved with Ambient Weather as a result of my wife’s gift of a weather station this past Christmas. A month or so ago Alix posted that she was making available 10,000 PPE face shields to Ambient members for donation to their first responders. I responded to her offer and 200 were delivered to our Central Pierce Fire and Rescue. CPFR EMS has a special place in our hearts as both my wife and I have taken rides with EMS in past months.

They were presented to CPFR Capt Darrin Shaw in front of Station 62."
Ambient Weather Network welcomes the highest altitude online weather station in Brazil
From William S, a member of the Ambient Weather User Group:

"Today, we installed the highest altitude online weather station in Brazil, exactly 1900 meters (6233 feet) above sea level, in the border of Maria da Faith, Cristina, and Dom Viçoso."
