Amelia serving as Guest Chaplain
|
|
This coming week Amelia is going to be the Guest Chaplain at Kanuga in Hendersonville, NC. Here's what she has to say about her upcoming week ....
Off to the Mountains!
One of my favorite things about summer is getting away from the hustle and bustle, even if only for a few days. This coming week I have the privilege of serving as Chaplain for Guest Period 5 at Kanuga Camp and Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC.
Throughout the week I’ll be leading worship and bible studies, spending time working on plans for formation at St. James’s for the coming year, and making memories with my kids as we hike to Eagle Rock or canoe in the lake. Kanuga is one of my favorite places in the world, much like ShrineMont or other retreat centers, it is the place I love to go to get away, to reset, and to find that time and space to be with God.
I hope that wherever you are and whatever you are doing this summer you find that space to be refreshed and refilled. To find out more about Kanuga visit www.kanuga.org.

Youth Mini- Mission 2022
St. James's Mini-Mission was July 22-24 and we want to share some mission photos and comments. Youth were Bowen McFadden, Henry Stock , Mason Acey, Tommy Stock, Lucy Arthur (Amelia's daughter) and Jake Acey. Adults were Ryon Acey, Katie Ricard, Emily Stock and Sarah Ramey
Friday July 22: " We took some time to get to know each other and build marshmallow towers. Then, we looked at hunger in the Bible and the modern world, taking some time to focus on food waste (and how gleaning helps combat food waste and hunger.) Finally, we cooked a “simple supper” of rice and beans, supplementing with some homegrown tomatoes and peppers. We also decorated cookies to help “feed” our parish on Sunday. (Get ready to eat some sugar cookie fish after church!)"
Saturday July 23: "Our first day of gleaning! It was hot, but we ended up gleaning 160 lbs of blackberries, which will feed 480 people. Our blackberries are on their way to Beaverdam Presbyterian’s food pantry!
We cooled off and had fun bowling and playing shuffleboard. Sadly, none of us will be going pro with our bowling skills anytime soon! Finally, it was back to St. James for a little more hunger education with Harvest of Hope, as well as some reflections on our day. We all realized how truly blessed we are."
Sunday, July 24: "This group was the definition of efficiency today! We had only two hours to glean, but we bested yesterday’s yield by 40 lbs! We ended up gleaning 203 lbs of blackberries, which will feed over 600 people!
The best part? These blackberries are headed to one of St. James’s main outreach partners- Caritas. We’re so happy to help out our “family.”
Our youth are amazing and we’re so glad we got the chance to serve with them."

Youth Creation Care Mission and Pilgrimage 2022
After waiting two years, a few of St. James's Youth were able to finally go on our Creation Care Mission and Pilgrimage to Key Largo. Here are a few pictures and comments from the mission that was from July 9-16. Youth were Sam Hubard, Taylor Sibley and Chase Hartley. Adults were Katie Ricard and John McCard.
"On our way down, we celebrated church at a rest stop in Brevard, FL. Grateful for a break from driving and to spend time in communion with each other."
"We started our visit here with a little lagoon snorkeling, a discussion of the various Keys habitats, and finally a lab on water quality. We finished the night with Compline and a competitive four square game."
" ....we learned about the mangroves and sea grasses and did some snorkeling. We saw two nurse sharks! ....we saw amazing fish, corals, a turtle, and another nurse shark.
.....God’s creation was in full glory today. "
"Nothing is perfect, but today felt like it! ....Today we saw the immensity of God’s creation in the open ocean, but also the smallness under our microscope. His creation is perfection.
The reefs were absolutely STUNNING.... They were full of marine life .... The reefs we saw were very healthy with little disease or bleaching....Our afternoon was filled with labs where we studied phytoplankton and invertebrate behavior and diversity."
"Throughout the day, we were reminded of our duty to care for God’s creation through careful study and to leave the reefs as we found it. God gave us dominion over nature, but as caretakers and not destroyers."

The Inklings Conference, being held September 22-24 at Nashota House in Delafield, WI, is a unique and fascinating opportunity to explore the creative imaginations of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers. And to make it even more interesting, one of the featured speakers will be our very own John McCard.
Nashota House's lakeside campus is the ideal location for this 3-day immersion into three of our most brilliant thinkers, which includes a public viewing of Tolkien manuscripts at nearby Marquette University.
To learn more about The Inklings Conference, go here. If have any interest in attending, please reach out to John (jmccard@doers.org) and he'll happily advise you on making arrangements.
