Monponsett Ponds
Waterways & Fishing
Monponsett Pond in Halifax is also known as Monponsett Lake and/or Twin Lakes. This body of water is actually a system of two ponds, East and West Lake that is connected by a causeway. Although Halifax claims the lake, a small portion of West Monponsett Pond extends into Hanson. The outflow is Stump Brook, a tributary of Poor Meadow Brook, in the northwestern part of West Monponsett Pond. The pond is part of the Taunton River Watershed.
The Ponds in the Major's Purchase, a large tract of lands bought from Josias Wampatuck of Massachusetts by a group of English investors, with only two exceptions, drain into the ocean to the east. Monponsett is unique in that, while it is only seven miles from the ocean to the east, it finds its outlet to the sea 40 miles away at Bristol, Rhode Island. Ponds in our abutting towns of Hanson and Pembroke are called the Mattakeeset Ponds and fall about the same distance as our Monponsett Pond. When bodies of water shed their surplus water in shortened distances, the disturbances caused are apt to be destructive. The runoff accordingly is seldom violent from Monponsett nor in any ponds of the Taunton River system.
Years ago, unknown if still true today, eight feet of water at the dam on Furnace street would have risen Monponsett only two feet. A three-foot rise at the Titicut Falls checks the Taunton River current at the Childs Bridge on Cherry Street. This bridge is a bound between Bridgewater and Halifax, the point being that in six miles the drop is only three feet. Put another way, from Monponsett to Taunton, which is tide water and just 20 miles away, the water falls only one foot per mile.
In the early 1800's Halifax paid twenty-one dollars for nine hundred herring that it took to stock the ponds. Until the factories at the Bosworth Mill site on Furnace Street got too numerous, there used to be a great supply of herring in the pond and a fee was collected for the taking of the humble fish. But by far the toll taken from licensed iron ore diggers was the greatest source of income for the town. The rate at the time the furnace and forge were running was 25 cents a ton. At one time the price rose to 50 cents.
Monponsett Pond was a choice fishing source for pike. Sportsmen came from long distances to enjoy this plentiful supply of a species that then was popular. And of course, with such a source at hand, individuals took advantage and fished commercially. The main outlet for the catch was the Boston Market. 2,000 pounds was once noted as a delivery to the market.

America the Beautiful
Seriously.
There is so much beauty.
*Majestic landscape
*Public lands, deep natural beauty, where I can wander in deep thought and connect with all of creation.
*Religious & speech freedom: I can think and say what I want.
*A society that accepts and encourages me, a woman, to develop my own business concept.
*And a government and community who assist when life throws curve balls.
While HOW these things are achieved are hotly debated… enough to drive a person over the edge during an election…
Just the fact that they CAN be openly debated is another thing that makes us beautiful.
And so I would like to share with you America the Beautiful 2020. New words for a new world.
Enjoy.
