FLEX Program Celebrates 30 Years of Transformative Exchanges

Sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) promotes mutual understanding and cross-cultural appreciation between citizens of the United States and countries across Europe, Eurasia, and Central Asia. The program was established in 1992 by former Senator Bill Bradley in the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution. Initially focused on 12 countries in Europe and Eurasia, FLEX has since expanded to encompass 22 countries, cultivating a robust alumni network of over 30,000 individuals.

In 2024, American Councils for International Education's regional offices hosted events to celebrate FLEX’s 30th anniversary. These events provided alumni with invaluable networking and reconnection opportunities. Attendees reflected on the significant impact of FLEX on their lives and expressed appreciation for the enduring communities and friendships formed through the program.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program Alumni Perspectives on Juneteenth

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Independence Day, is the oldest and most popular annual celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people. Celebrated annually on June 19, the federal holiday commemorates a pivotal moment in American history and reminds us of the ongoing fight for equality. In honor of Juneteenth, Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program staff connected with Jahleel Johnson (Turkish 2023) on what Juneteenth means to him.

"This holiday reminds us to continue fighting for equality and, most importantly, to establish relationships with people from all backgrounds to help make this world a better place. How can we live in a society when we do not understand one another? That's why I love CLS because I can understand and experience a whole new culture."

American Councils' Estonia office proudly announces the addition of a new program to its portfolio. In collaboration with Tallinn University’s School of Humanities, Department of Russian and East European Studies, the Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) will be offered in Tallinn, Estonia. On June 7-8, a comprehensive arrival orientation was held at Tallinn University, providing students with the opportunity to engage with both local and international staff members from American Councils.

The organization expresses its sincere gratitude to Tallinn University, our generous host families, and our alumni conversation partners for their invaluable support in ensuring the successful launch of this program.
