Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti Visits
American Councils
On May 19, American Councils had the honor of hosting His Excellency Albin Kurti, Prime Minister of Kosovo, for a reception along with esteemed supporters, representatives from the U.S. Department of State, Kosovo American Education Fund (KAEF) alumni, and leaders in international education. During his remarks, Prime Minister Kurti advocated for continuing to strengthen education in Kosovo and expressed his appreciation for American Councils contributions to build intellectual and professional opportunities for its citizens. Dr. David Patton, American Councils President & CEO, voiced the organization’s readiness to expand its efforts in Kosovo and reviewed KAEF’s achievements in supporting graduate education at top U.S. universities. American Councils is grateful for Prime Minister Kurti’s dedication to the development of Kosovo through quality education programs like KAEF.

Kosovo American Education Fund (KAEF) represents one of the most prestigious higher education programs in Kosovo, providing graduate fellowships for master’s level study at leading U.S. universities. The program aims to empower the future leaders of Kosovo with the knowledge and tools needed to promote the country’s economic development. To date, through a competitive and merit-based process, the KAEF program has awarded over 110 graduate scholarships to talented Kosovars to study at over 40 U.S. universities, who then return home to make an impactful contribution via the private and public sectors.

American Councils Celebrates Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month where the U.S. celebrates the accomplishments and contributions the AAPI community has made to our nation and abroad. American Councils appreciates this opportunity to again recognize and celebrate our Asian American students, alumni, and participants of the programs we administer.

Academic IQ, a program produced through a partnership with American Councils, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Ukraine’s National Agency for Education Quality Assurance, has been working hard to adjust their plans due to Russia’s war. The program, which develops a professionalized workforce of educators and administrators who support academic integrity across Ukrainian higher education institutions (HEIs) and secondary schools, has shifted to help support Ukrainian universities maintain continuity in their curriculum.

Alumni in the World
Gayane Aghabalyan, a 2015 Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program alumna and former FLEX Alumni Coordinator, consistently demonstrates her commitment to overcoming adversity. After spending an academic year studying in Sterling, VA, Gayane returned to Armenia to attend the American University of Armenia, where she received her bachelor's degree in English and Communication. Gayane now uses her writing skills to tell inspiring stories through children's literature.

Alina Beskrovna, a 2007 Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program alumna and native of Mariupol, Ukraine, spent weeks interpreting and translating for English-speaking journalists on the frontlines. On March 26, NPR aired an interview with Alina about being trapped in Mariupol as Russian forces laid siege. Alina and her story were also featured on ABC News and other media platforms.
