For several years, consumer confidence remained low as taxes increased and participation in the labor force declined. However, the economy is finally beginning to improve. This election the direction of the economy, as well as Americans' economic opportunities, are at stake.

The President's policies have repaired most of the damages caused by the Democratic-controlled Congress. Republicans' tax reform repealed the individual mandate, one of Obamacare's central features, which Americans for Tax Reform cites as one of the leading causes of higher taxes under the Obama Administration. Republicans also lowered the corporate tax rate, making it easier for businesses to offer more jobs and employee benefits. The results of these recent reforms are encouraging: 201,000 jobs were added in August, the consumer confidence index hit a 17-year high, and the Small Business Optimist Index rose to its highest levels since President Reagan. Additionally, the Labor Department reported this month that the number of unemployment benefit applications has dropped to its lowest level since 1969, meaning more Americans are keeping their jobs.

The economy is on an upward trend and we need to keep it moving in the right direction. The labor force participation rate has increased, but it's still lower than other developed economies. We need to help more individuals to develop job skills so they can enter the workforce, and we need to reduce the biggest barriers to labor force participation, such as the opioid epidemic that's causing too many people to fail the drug test when applying for work.

Please join me as Republicans work to improve the economy for America's families. Our positive reforms will restore the American Dream for the Fourth District and other parts of America.
