It was rather warm by the time we got out this morning, not so good for songbird activity, but great for dragonflies! So, as you will see in the slide show, we spent a lot of time looking at non-avian creatures. Despite the heat, you can really tell that fall is coming.

Today, the honors of Bird of the Day did not go to the charismatic megafauna (i.e. snowy egret), but rather to the delightfully bright and joyful American Goldfinch. They are just finishing up nesting because they delay nesting to coincide with the ripening of the thistles. Thistles provide both food and nesting material to the goldfinches. Most other songbirds have long since wrapped up nesting activities. One of the slide show images shows an adult feeding fledglings. The goldfinches were still very vocal this morning.
