National Perspectives/Immigration Policy

The impact of immigration on the state and local level is the theme of the Portal's "State-Specific Studies" collection. Many of these studies focus on the economic impact of immigration, including the role of immigrant entrepreneurs in jumpstarting or sustaining local economies. Other studies look at how well immigrant have integrated into the social, civic, and economic life of the community.

Several think tanks and university centers have taken the lead in producing these studies. One such organization is New American Economy. Through its Map the Impact service, key data, such as immigrant spending power and taxes paid, are available by state, congressional district or urban area for the entire country.  New American Economy also produces more detailed reports on selected states and communities.  Another organization working to illuminate the impact of immigration on local communities is the Migration Policy Institute. Through its Migration Data Hub, one can access state-level data on immigrant English language proficiency, educational levels, labor force participation rates, occupational breakdowns, income, and poverty rates.
