Potential Incident in Corning, NY

A residential explosion destroyed at least one home, damaging several more nearby and knocked out power for at least 15 homes. Further details have not been confirmed at this time. There is no need to respond at this time, but nearby volunteers should be prepared for a potential call-down and sheltering incident. Thanks to all volunteers who remain alert and available to respond to unforeseen incidents!

Severe Storm in Elmira, NY

A tornado touched down on Thursday around 4pm in Elmira.  The American Red Cross has sheltered approximately 53 people overnight. 
 
Power and phones were disrupted and acceptability to this part of the region  is still limited.  Parts of Steuben County were also impacted.

Park Avenue Festival

August 4 & 5

Rochester, NY

Red Cross will have an informational booth at the Park Av Festival August 4 & 5 that will include the ERV (emergency response vehicle). We will be providing information about the program and services Red Cross has available. Volunteers are needed to staff the booth on both Saturday and Sunday in 2-hour shifts 10 AM - 12 noon; 12 noon-2 PM; 2-4 PM and 4-6 PM. Steuben County Fair

August 14-19

Bath, NY

We are looking for volunteers to sit at the information booth at the Steuben County Fair in Bath. The Red Cross will be sitting with representatives from other services such as 911, and our goal is to bring public awareness to the services we provide as well recruit new volunteers! DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DRILL

 

Last Thursday, the American Red Cross participated with the Livingston County Department of Health on a functional needs drill at the former Livonia Middle School in Livonia.  As part of the drill, the American Red Cross registered clients into a shelter.  If the client had special needs, they met with the Livingston County Department of Health to ascertain their needs.  A total of 50 clients were served during the drill. 

 

Both Red Cross Chapters in Livingston County, the Northern Livingston County Chapter and the Clara Barton Chapter participated in the drill.

 

Red Cross volunteer and paid staff working at the drill were:  Joan "Shawnie" Kingsbury, Bradley W. Lowell, Joy Perovich, Terri, Alex, and Katlyn Spurlock, Janet Craft, Holger Stave, Ellen Spink, Alyse Meyers, David W. Parish, Elders Maisey and Stoddard, Lee Cookingham, Sandy Shaw, and David A. Ontario County Fair

 

Last week, July 24 through 28, the DeKalb motorcycle that was auctioned off as a contribution to the American Red Cross was displayed at the Ontario County Fair. Holger Stave and Sonia Henry (right) checked it out during their volunteer time at the fair. 

 

The WOC office had a display booth providing information about all aspects of the American Red Cross just behind the motorcycle display.  Other volunteers at the fair were Dennis Brewer, Maggie Miller, Sue Bennett, and Roger Kessler

Disaster Assessment Basics

Disaster Assessment Basics is an instructor-led, basic level course. The course encompasses the tasks and responsibilities of the Disaster Assessment activity on a disaster relief operation. The course includes a section on local disaster incidents, which may be customized by the instructor for a local disaster program.

 

The Disaster Assessment Basics course is not a replacement for the Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment course; it is a complementary course developed for a different audience. This new course is designed for local community volunteers, primarily Disaster Action Team (DAT) members.

 

Disaster Services - An Overview

August 8 6 PM

An instructor-led, basic level course that provides an introduction to Disaster Services at the American Red Cross.

 

Disaster Kitchen Training 

August 13 & 14

Corning, NY

 

Disaster Kitchen Training is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to give the participants the opportunity to learn how to work in a kitchen preparing meals for delivery to clients affected by a disaster.  Participants will be preparing a meal during the class and must bring attire that will allow them to prepare food, load and unload emergency response vehicles (ERVs) and clean the kitchen and ERVs.  The purpose of this course is for Red Cross and partner agency staff to work at a kitchen site and prepare large numbers of meals for those affected by a disaster. Activities at a kitchen site include: preparing the food in the kitchen and working in the yard area, supply area and mobile feeding area, if needed.

 

Disaster Health and Sheltering Course - Train the Trainer Event

Wednesday, August 15th, from 5-9 PM

On Wednesday evening, August 15th we will be offering a Train the Trainer event to introduce Red Cross Disaster Health Service representatives to the Disaster Health and Sheltering Course. The objective for the Train the Trainer event is to prepare you to collaborate with nursing schools that wish to offer this course, it will prepare you to offer the course to nursing students and potential Red Cross community partners.

In order to prepare for the August 15th Train the Trainer event, you need to take Part 1 of the Disaster Health and Sheltering course, prior to August 13th. Disaster Action Team Orientation

August 15 6 PM

A small disaster such as a house fire can be just as devastating to a family as a large disaster--sometimes even more. Do you want to respond to local disasters year round? When a Red Cross chapter receives a call about a house fire or other local emergency situation, it is the Disaster Action Team (DAT) who responds. They go to the scene to assist the victims of the disaster with their immediate needs for food, clothing, shelter, and emotional support.  This class introduces disaster volunteers to the responsibilities and privileges of DAT response.

 

Shelter Operations 

August 20 6 PM

Shelter Operations is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to give 
participants an overview of the American Red Cross policies and 
procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. 
The course includes lecture and group exercises.

  

Shelter Simulation
August 22 6 PM
Greater Rochester Chapter
50 Prince St, Rochester
 
Shelter Simulation is an instructor-led, basic level course. The simulation 
builds on the information presented in the Shelter Operations course and 
provides participants an opportunity to practice working with procedures 
for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster.

The 2012 volunteer recognition and appreciation will be Wednesday, September 19 at the George Eastman House. Invitations will be going out around August 19 - so please RSVP! Take a tour of George Eastman's home, enjoy good food and celebrate the great work all of you do to support our Red Cross Mission.
