“Smoking Weed with Jesus" is a hilarious and irreverent exploration of the intersection between spirituality and cannabis culture. The song narrates a journey of someone who indulges in marijuana and ponders the possibility of Jesus being a cannabis enthusiast. Through witty lyrics and vivid imagery, Daniel paints a picture of an encounter with Jesus where they share a joint and ponder what Heaven may hold in store for like-minded stoners, while the retro country, twangy “high-octane” production rolls along like a fast-moving train out of control.
“Smoking Weed with Jesus" was written by Daniel, produced by Derek Hames, and mixed by John Shelton at Edgewater Music Studios in Sugar Land Texas. The track was mastered by John Moran (ZZ Top, Rolling Stones, Neil Young), and features Daniel on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Derek Hames on guitar, backing vocals, and B-3 organ, John Shelton on lead guitar, Mark Riddell on bass, and Isaias Gil drums. The high-camp music video was filmed by videographer Luke Adams and directed and edited by AJ Vallejo.
“This song didn’t come from me, it came TO me like a bolt a of lightning,” says Daniel. “I had been writing every week in the Austin BMI office writer’s room and I kept hearing this inner voice saying, ‘Write it.’ ‘Write the song.’ So, I scheduled a day to go back and when I did, I wrote two verses and a chorus.”
“Well the other day I was getting stoned,
I mean getting baked like to the bone
When a thought arised that got my wheels a turning
I was thinking about that Devil's plant
How it had saved my life and things like that
And how God spoke to Moses through a bush a burning
Well it only makes sense and it just adds up
There's a lot more to it than some wine in a cup
And I believe that Jesus was a stoner
Smoking weed with Jesus, high as the Almighty
Passing it between us, Lord you should have seen us
Feeling quite peaceful, stoned to the Bejesus
Passing it between us, Getting stoned with Jesus”
