An Announcement from Sean Kennedy

March 25, 2014

Dear FCDS Families:

After 10 great years at FCDS, I will be stepping down from my position as Director of the Upper School at the end of this school year to become Co-Director of College Counseling at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh. It has always been my desire to achieve a healthy work/life balance, but despite my efforts and the support of others, I do not believe I can fulfill that goal any other way but by stepping down. Now is the time for me to pursue a professional role that allows me to devote more of my time, energy, and attention to the most important group in my life: my family. Having led the College Counseling office at FCDS and my previous school, I am confident that my new role is the most appropriate career path for my future and my family.

One lesson I have learned from working with teenagers and their parents for 15 years at two different schools is that children grow up so fast. I am witnessing that now with a 9- and a 6-year-old and I know that if I blink, they will be 18 and 15 tomorrow. Like every parent, I want to share in every moment possible and with the energy and attention for joy when all is well and for comfort when things are not.

I am grateful to Dr. Stumpo for his counsel to me and his leadership of our school during this school year and I look forward to watching our ambitious vision come to fruition. With help from our administration, faculty, and staff and support from parents, our students can and will accomplish great things at FCDS and I will always be proud to have contributed to the development of that vision. I have many people to thank, so I will reserve my gratitude toward them for another occasion. However, I would be remiss if I did not thank Ed McBride, Jennifer Nugent, and the Upper School faculty for their hard work and support.

There are many days remaining in our school year and I look forward to finishing this school year on a strong note with the help of our community!

Sincerely,

Sean Kennedy

Upper School Director

A Message from Dr. Stumpo

March 25, 2014

Dear FCDS Community Members,

I write to you today to join Sean Kennedy in announcing that he will be leaving Forsyth Country Day School as Upper School Director effective June 30, 2014 to become Co-Director of College Counseling at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh. I am grateful to Sean for his strong leadership of our Upper School, and for the innumerable ways in which he has helped to advance our mission and vision as a member of the senior administrative team. He has been one of the strongest proponents of our new program, and his wisdom and expertise have been invaluable in creating our curriculum white paper. Sean has also played a key role in both guiding the daily life and in shaping the future of FCDS's Upper School. I am extremely grateful to Sean for all he has done for FCDS, and I hope you will join me in thanking him for his significant contributions and in wishing him the greatest happiness with his family and the greatest success in his future professional endeavors.

We have just completed a search for our new Upper School Director, and I am delighted to announce that we have hired Dr. Clinton Calzini to assume that role effective July 1. After earning his bachelor's degree in secondary education, Dr. Calzini received his master's degree in school leadership from Harvard University and his doctorate in educational planning, policy, and leadership from The College of William and Mary.

Dr. Calzini's professional achievements are as notable as his educational credentials. A seasoned independent school educator, he has served as an administrator and Principal for students in grades 6-12 for the past nine years, first as the Middle and High School Principal of the International School of Belgrade in Serbia and currently as Secondary Principal of Westlake Academy in Westlake, Texas (a school consistently recognized by ranking publications as one of the nation's top 50 high schools).

Dr. Calzini also has an impressive international background that will serve Forsyth Country Day School well as we seek to expand our global focus. Though American by birth, he earned his high school diploma in England and lived abroad and taught in Scotland, Russia, Brazil, and Serbia for 11 years before returning to the United States.

In hiring Dr. Clinton Calzini to lead our Upper School, Forsyth Country Day School reaffirms its commitment to its mission of providing our students one of the finest college-preparatory programs in the nation enriched with a significant global focus completed by - and firmly grounded in - the development of good character.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Calzini and his family to the FCDS community.

Most sincerely,

Vincent M. Stumpo, Ph.D.
