AN APPEAL ON BEHALF OF

THE EXHAUSTED

Source of all creation, be here with us now, because we are really busy. You know how much work it can be just to get wherever we are going, so that we can do whatever we are supposed to be doing. It is a lot of work just for our body parts to get moving in the right direction, to get breakfast on the table, or to eat it standing up while doing something else. You know how difficult it can be just to get ourselves dressed, and the kids dressed, if we have any kids to dress. Save us from demanding Post-its on the refrigerator door. And don’t forget to walk the dog or feed the hamster. I feel exhausted just writing about being exhausted.

And then there are all those calls we need to make, bills we need to pay, clothes that need to be laundered, emails and texts we feel we need to answer asap. Everything nowadays seems like an asap. We all know that As…soon…as…possible…means…now!

If love is the glue that holds the universe together, then may your steadfast love be the sticky sealant that closes the virtual envelope in which our very real prayers or thoughts are placed. May you receive them now because we are real, real tired.

God of Love, you know how exhausting it can be to untangle last years’ Christmas lights and memories, to find the Hanukkah menorah and candles, the Kwanzaa Kinara candle holder and candles, and an aluminum pole for the Festivus for the Restivus. You know what it is like to barely be able to shop, let alone spree. You know what it is like to be overextended at holiday time, unemployed at Christmas, unhealthy at Hanukkah, lonely at Kwanzaa, and overstimulated at a Festivus for the Restivus.

Advocate of Unity, you know it is important for people to gather, physically or virtually, during holidays when spirits fly almost as high as expectations. Stockings may be stuffed but so too are our minds, perhaps at this moment, with countless urgent things that we shoulda, woulda, coulda already done or be doing at this moment. But instead, we have chosen to be here, now, with you.

Assist us as we slow down, if even for this moment. Help us to take a deep, cleansing breath, and then to let…it…go. Help us to put the critic in our head back to bed, if even for a few moments, so that we can relax, free of nagging thoughts, worry, and planning the rest of our day, week, month, or life.

Dear origin of creation and of life itself, help us, just for a moment if not longer ~ to rest in silent, thoughtless awareness of your love. We now offer you a holiday gift of our prayer, mantra, groan, sigh or song. We offer our body, heart, spirit, mind, and this moment of sacred silence.
