Remember the days when employers handed you a beeper or BlackBerry and then a cell phone to connect you with colleagues or customers in real time? I was sure I had made the “big leagues” when I got my company issued flip phone back in the 90s. Those devices were cool back then, but with the explosion of smartphone availability in the 2000s, what could be deployed next? Many people already own devices that measure steps, pulse, or heart rate.

The health of the workforce is always a priority because a healthy team leads to fewer absences, better productivity, a positive outlook and moderated costs for employees and employers. Over the last couple of decades, company health and wellness programs have proven to be effective tools, and the future looks even brighter as smart and “wearable” technology becomes more affordable and sophisticated.

The week’s economic news starts today with consumer one- and three-year inflation expectations. On Tuesday, we’ll see the NFIB small-business index for April and real household debt for Q1. Consumer price index results for April are out on Wednesday, while late April and early May jobless claims data are made public on Thursday. We finish up the week on Friday with April import price index figures and the University of Michigan consumer sentiment and five-year inflation expectation results.

Companies with earnings calls today include AECOM, BioNTech, Groupon, and Simon Property Group. Tuesday headliners include Callaway Golf, Fox Corp., Hyatt Hotels, Planet Fitness, Sysco, and Warner Music Group. Walt Disney, Beyond Meat, Toyota Motor, and Wendy’s host calls on Wednesday.
