Waterton Lake Cruise |
Class Summary
Cross the Rocky Mountains from the Columbia Plateau to the Great Plains. Explore the magnificent Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park. View Mount Cleveland from a boat on Waterton Lake. Walk across giant ripple marks on the floor of Glacial Lake Missoula. Float the Flathead River. Hike the Continental Divide. Look for big mammals and late wildflowers. See mountains that have been shoved tens of miles and where Canadian ice turned horizontal sediments vertical.
Although the glaciers are mostly gone, Glacier National Park (GNP) has the best "textbook" glacial landforms in the Pacific Northwest. As a glacial geomorphologist, Bob has brought students to GNP four times in the past. There is no substitute for what can be learned there in terms of glacial erosion and deposition. The fluvial landforms are also well exhibited. In terms of structural geology, the view of the Lewis Overthrust is dramatic proof of the horizontal nature of plate tectonics. The Belt Supergroup has excellent sedimentary rocks and structures, such as Precambrian armored mudballs. GNP is also a cornerstone of Northern Rockies flora, fauna, and ecology.

Glacier & Waterton Lakes National Parks
|
The
Waterton Biosphere Reserve
(WBR) in Waterton Lakes National Park was Canada's second biosphere reserve after Mont Saint-Hilaire near Montreal and is one of only 18 biosphere reserves in Canada. WBR was declared a reserve in 1979, three years after
Glacier Biosphere Reserve
in Glacier National Park, USA.
UNESCO designated Water-Glacier International Peace Park as a
World Heritage Site on December 6th, 1995. A World Heritage Site is a place of special cultural or physical significance to the world. To be listed, sites must be of universal value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria. The protection, management, authenticity and integrity of the sites are also an important consideration.
Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park are recognized by the
International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) as an International Dark Sky Park. The two parks are the first trans-boundary IDA. This joint effort recognizes the incredibly dark skies found at the two parks and makes a commitment to protecting and preserving these high-quality conditions.
