Kalani Oceanside Retreat

"Yearning for a new way will not produce it.
Only ending the old way can do that.

You cannot hold onto the old all the while
declaring that you want something new.

There is only one way to bring in the new.

You must make room for it."

~ Neale Donald Walsch

Arms Out Point

Aloha ʻohana,

Every spring, we are reminded of the cycles of life on earth, and of life's constant renewal. Sitting at the threshold of our own invincible summer, a deeply buried impulse begins to move through us.

Inevitably, we must relinquish the old.

Empty out your proverbial bowl, to make room for the new. It takes gumption to let go of the past in order to make room for something new. But we are the vessels to our own lives. We are the carved out and emptied bowl. What we want done for us, must be done through us.

This emptying out is more than just a simple task to be done mindlessly. It is, in fact, a uniquely powerful, mystical moment. Can we relinquish the past? Envision and feel our future? Yet sit in the present moment without either?

This moment energizes and revitalizes us. We must make room for it.

As with that of an empty bowl, our emptiness dictates that we can and will hold whatever we put in this emptiness. As life is constantly flowing, it becomes our choice to consciously fill the bowl with the most pure form of our heart's desire.

Perhaps the next time you see an empty bowl, whether it is a piece of carved art at a museum or a simple cereal bowl, you can remind yourself of this symbolism and ask yourself: Am I willing to be emptied out, to make room for the next beautiful thing?

Unique to Hawaiian culture, bowl making is said to have been elevated to a spiritual, perhaps religious level. Every stage of bowl making was considered sacred, from the type of wood used, to the way in which it was carved out and polished.

The simple symbolism of a bowl has moved countless cultures and artists. An empty bowl holds potential. It is a vessel. It represents promise.

Like the sacred bowl maker in Hawaiʻi, we agree to allow the entire process to be sacred: the realization that we desire something new; the letting go or carving out of that which no longer serves us; and the willingness to sit, empty, and allow light to move through us.

PMF

Come celebrate Puna and enjoy local music at the Puna Music Festival, presented by KAPA FM, home of Hawai`i's music, and supported by the Hawaiian Tourism Authority and County of Hawaii.

With four major concerts and a schedule full of workshops and special gatherings, this week long celebration is sure to be fun for all ages.

This year's festival kicks off on Sunday, May 5th with a free, day-long, outdoor concert at Pohoiki. See cultural performances from Puna's hula halau, youth from four local schools, the Puna Men's Chorus, Sean Robbins, and then enjoy our headliners Kuana Torres Kahele and Kaumakaiwa Kanakaʻole.

On Wednesday, May 8th, we feature the Kalapana Night Market and the extraordinary Hawaiian music this venue has become known for. The night market draws people from all over the island, and this special evening will be an extra-special tribute to home-grown Hawaiian music.

Indulge yourself with dinner, shopping, and sound at our Kanikapila in Pahoa on Friday, May 10th, with musicians appearing in the windows, balconies, and storefronts of old Pahoa town. John Cruz will headline this evening at the historic Akebono Theater. Come for a whole lot of fun, and let music inspire you.

Our closing concert on Saturday, May 11th, will feature Nahko and Medicine for the People, a local favorite who is making it big on the mainland. Nahko draws people from all over with his soulful lyrics and engaging music.  Held at the Kalani EMAX, this will be an event not to be missed.

The Puna Music Festival is more than just entertainment. This event uniquely focuses on crowdsourcing, bridging the audience/performer divide, and Hawaiian music culture. Experiment with and develop your musical talent in one of our immersive three-day workshops.

Healing Dance has many aspects, all based on the healing power of movement. This 16 hour course is designed to acquaint participants with the Healing Dance.

The history, theory and applications of the technique are covered first. Then, entering the pool, each participant is given a direct experience of Healing Dance through receiving a mini-session. Body mechanics and body awareness are emphasized through games and dance on land and in the water.

Students discover how to support and move their receiver in the water. These skills enable them to learn a simple practice sequence that will prepare them to take Basic Healing Dance.

Kalani has one of the largest Watsu pools in the United States, an excellent facility to learn this beautiful and transformative art.

Follows the moves of Basic Watsu, learning long, gracefully flowing transitions into and out of Watsu's major positions. Explore the Art of "Being" without doing, while entering a deep state of presence.

Learn how to support and move each person as effortlessly as possible in the water, while keeping good body mechanics and strong ethics. Learn to support someone on your legs and access their whole body. Integrate Basic and Transition Flow into complete sessions that you adapt to people of all sizes, shapes and dispositions.

NOTE: May take the first two days as Basic Watsu

Basic Watsu moves open all Watsu sessions and are the first third of what is taught in Watsu 1. In this 16 hour course you will learn a progression of moves that you can share with anyone.

Starting with the Waterbreath Dance, you learn to stay in the emptiness at the bottom of the breath until the breathing of the one in your arms draws you up out of it. You then learn to move to the rhythm of that breath you now share, building into a faster move that stopping, takes you beyond the breath, into a stillness where you can connect to whatever movement within the one you float has been activated.

In that same stillness, floating someone at your heart, you can access whatever rises up from your heart out your arms under them. The more you access together the movement from within, the more it leads you into a continuum through the changes of the position of your arm in what is called Explore Flow.

NOTE: Basic Watsu will be the first two days of Watsu 1

We often live knowing what we don't want, but seldom do we know exactly what we do want!

  • Is your yoga practice cultivating a sense of balance or do you find yourself getting injured or feeling dissatisfied?
  • Are you happy and content in your relationships?
  • Is your job or career satisfying?
  • Are there obstacles that constantly get in the way of your spiritual journey?

The path towards wholeness requires knowing what you want in your life. Only then can you live with a deeper sense of integrity, a stronger sense of purpose, and with a clearer set of intentions. Only then will your dharma, or path, truly unfold to cultivate samtosa, or contentment.

How we approach our asana (mat) practice is a great metaphor for how we approach and conduct ourselves off the mat.

In this workshop we will blend profound yoga sutras into asana practices to serve as food for thought, and to help pave the way towards discovering your greatest gifts. We welcome all levels of yogis and yoginis, and if you are a yoga teacher already, this will expand your repertoire of teaching in a very accessible and helpful way for your students.
