A Poem for Epiphany:

"The Three Kings"

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Three Kings came riding from far away,

Melchior and Gaspar and Baltasar;

Three Wise Men out of the East were they,

And they travelled by night and they slept by day,

For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star.

The star was so beautiful, large and clear,

That all the other stars of the sky

Became a white mist in the atmosphere,

And by this they knew that the coming was near

Of the Prince foretold in the prophecy.

Three caskets they bore on their saddle-bows,

Three caskets of gold with golden keys;

Their robes were of crimson silk with rows

Of bells and pomegranates and furbelows,

Their turbans like blossoming almond-trees.

And so the Three Kings rode into the West,

Through the dusk of the night, over hill and dell,

And sometimes they nodded with beard on breast,

And sometimes talked, as they paused to rest,

With the people they met at some wayside well.

“Of the child that is born,” said Baltasar,

“Good people, I pray you, tell us the news;

For we in the East have seen his star,

And have ridden fast, and have ridden far,

To find and worship the King of the Jews.”

And the people answered, “You ask in vain;

We know of no King but Herod the Great!”

They thought the Wise Men were men insane,

As they spurred their horses across the plain,

Like riders in haste, who cannot wait.

And when they came to Jerusalem,

Herod the Great, who had heard this thing,

Sent for the Wise Men and questioned them;

And said, “Go down unto Bethlehem,

And bring me tidings of this new king.”

So they rode away; and the star stood still,

The only one in the grey of morn;

Yes, it stopped—it stood still of its own free will,

Right over Bethlehem on the hill,

The city of David, where Christ was born.

And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guard,

Through the silent street, till their horses turned

And neighed as they entered the great inn-yard;

But the windows were closed, and the doors were barred,

And only a light in the stable burned.

And cradled there in the scented hay,

In the air made sweet by the breath of kine,

The little child in the manger lay,

The child, that would be king one day

Of a kingdom not human, but divine.

His mother Mary of Nazareth

Sat watching beside his place of rest,

Watching the even flow of his breath,

For the joy of life and the terror of death

Were mingled together in her breast.

They laid their offerings at his feet:

The gold was their tribute to a King,

The frankincense, with its odor sweet,

Was for the Priest, the Paraclete,

The myrrh for the body’s burying.

And the mother wondered and bowed her head,

And sat as still as a statue of stone,

Her heart was troubled yet comforted,

Remembering what the Angel had said

Of an endless reign and of David’s throne.

Then the Kings rode out of the city gate,

With a clatter of hoofs in proud array;

But they went not back to Herod the Great,

For they knew his malice and feared his hate,

And returned to their homes by another way.

An update from our treasurer

From David Hill, January 1

Dear Fellow Parishioners:

I am updating you on where we stand with our Stewardship Campaign spearheaded by chairs Pam Sayre and David Tate, with committee member Diana Empsall.

We have had 44 individuals and families pledge a total of $148,060, 92.5% of our goal. Among these 44 are three who are pledging for the first time. Thank you for being so generous with your giving. If you have any questions about pledging, please contact me.

You may recall that following the announcement in September that the parish had a $31,500 deficit, we asked for one-time donations to close this gap. In addition, a generous donor challenged the parish to donate $12,000 towards the deficit which they would match, dollar for dollar.

Prior to the announcement of the challenge grant, we received $7,500, and since the announcement we have received an additional $9,500. $8,000 of that has been matched by the donor to date. So, we end the 2025 with a total of $25,000 toward closing the deficit, with the expectation that we will raise the additional monies in 2026. Thank you!

Sunday School Update: Congratulations Claytons, and thank you Sarah Hill

Congratulations to Molly and Max Clayton, and happy birthday to Hogan, born on New Year’s Eve! We can’t wait to meet him when he’s ready. Thanks be to God for this little one, and prayers for a long and happy life, and for the whole Clayton family.

Meanwhile, we are all incredibly grateful to Sarah Hill for volunteering to cover Sunday School while Molly is on maternity leave. Thank you, Sarah, for keeping this vital program alive!

Annual Meeting and Potluck Luncheon, Sunday, January 18

The Annual Meeting will be next Sunday, January 18, immediately following worship.

This year we will hear brief reports and elect officers, but then spend most of our time in discussion with those at our table about what St. PJ's means to us today and what it can be tomorrow.

Please bring a dish to share for the potluck luncheon, and let Rev. Nathan know if you can help oversee the potluck setup!

Victory in the Spirit:

Avelo cancels deportation flights

From the Rev. Nathan Empsall, priest-in-charge

This week's unnecessary, immoral, and tragic murder of Renée Nicole Good, in Minnesota is a reminder that no matter what we think our immigration laws should be, it is vital that federal leaders and agents treat every person with basic decency, peace, and human rights -- and that simply isn't what's happening right now.

But the Epiphany star shines bright, and coming out of Advent and Christmas, we still remember that there is always light in the darkness.

Avelo Airlines, which maintains a large base at Tweed Airport here in New Haven, had been participating in the cruel system of deporting undocumented immigrants without the legally required due process to various foreign prisons with inhumane conditions. But thanks in part to local organizers, that changed this week.

On Wednesday, citing operational complexity and costs, Avelo announced that they are ending their contract with the federal government and will no longer participate in deportation flights. They didn't detail exactly what complexity and costs they meant, so this is no doubt thanks at least in part to pressure from the New Haven Immigrants Coalition, the new St. PJ's resident CT Students for a Dream (C4D), other local organizers, boycotting consumers, and protestors including multiple St. PJ's members!

When we raise our moral and prophetic voices together, it does make a difference for the marginalized!

Congratulations to New Havener of the Year, Tabitha Sookdeo

On the heels of the announcement that CT Students for a Dream (C4D) will rent office space in the St. PJ’s parish hall, the New Haven Independent has named their executive director, Tabitha Sookdeo, New Havener of the Year for 2025.

(And this was even before the aforementioned immigration coalition victory regarding Avelo!)

Tabitha is also known to some as St. PJ’s former capital campaign consultant. Congratulations, friend and neighbor, and well deserved!

VIDEO: Last Sunday's Service and Sermon

Last week was the second Sunday of Christmas. Rev. Nathan Empsall celebrated the Eucharist and we had an outstanding sermon from a guest preacher new to St. PJ's, Mindy Misener.

If you either missed or want to revisit previous Sundays at St. PJ's, you can find the recorded videos on our Facebook and/or YouTube pages. (Facebook automatically deletes videos after four weeks, but you can always find older archives on YouTube.)

Support Loaves & Fishes and Sunrise Cafe during renovation

The long-awaited replacement of the steps to the undercroft, right on the corner of Chapel and Olive, is underway! The old steps have been ripped up, and the work proceeds. This means that our front yard along Olive Street is fenced off while construction is underway. It is anticipated that the process will take about eight weeks total.

While we are disappointed that we are not able to include a ramp in the project, the new steps will be wider, safer and more welcoming to the community. Please direct questions to Brian Fillmore as Capital Campaign Project Manager.

Sunrise Cafe and Loaves & Fishes continue to operate, using alternate entryways to the undercroft. We acknowledge that this may be difficult timing for such an inconvenience -- first during the holidays, now with winter ongoing, and with some still reeling from the pause in SNAP benefits -- so please donate to either important organization if you can:

Reach out to Rev. Nathan to Schedule Your Household Visit

By the Rev. Nathan Empsall, priest-in-charge

By now, you've likely heard me say that I want to visit every St. PJ's household. I want to hear about who you are, what makes you tick, what you believe and love, your history at St. PJ's, and your hopes for the future of our common life together. Ideally this meeting would be at your home, where I can get to know you in your own environment and also offer a home blessing, but coffee shops and walks in the park are okay too.

These meetings are happening, and I have greatly enjoyed them -- but I am also realizing that I am my own bottleneck when it comes to scheduling, as I reach out to families one or two at a time. To try and speed things up, I invite you to reach out to me with some suggested times and dates we might meet.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are ideal, but Fridays and Saturdays are okay too. While weekday daytimes are certainly best, I understand that work schedules can necessitate evenings or Saturdays. Please email me at revnathan@stpaulstjames.org, and I hope to see you outside the church building soon!

There's always more...

Please remember that there is a blue Lost & Found bin in the church office.

If you would like to submit an item for consideration in the eNews or bulletin announcements, please let Rev. Nathan know at revnathan@stpaulstjames.org by next Wednesday afternoon.

Please contact Monifa Atkinson in the church office at office@stpaulstjames.org or (203) 562-2143 if you are interested in receiving more information about any of the following:
