A Terrific Tutoring Year Has Begun!

We’ve successfully launched another year of tutoring! As of November 13, all our programs – seven first grade Book Buddies programs, one Kindergarten Book Buddies program, and two kindergarten Reading Readiness programs – are up and running. Thanks to a generous grant by Westminster Presbyterian Church, every student in our program was given a Welcome to Tutoring book – kindergartners received Llama Llama Loves to Read and first graders took home copies of Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School .

We still have 9 students identified for our program who need tutors.  We particularly need tutors in the John Adams Book Buddies program. Please tell your neighbors, friends or business associates about our program and our need for more tutors. Anyone with questions may call Program Director Lisa Jacobs at 703-549-6670 x119.
ATC is Grateful for our Tutors!

A big thank you to those of you who are already tutoring and who have attended our tutor training sessions. Watch for more training opportunities as the school year unfolds, particularly our “troubleshooting” session sometime in the New Year. We first offered this last year, at the request of tutors, and it proved to be very helpful. Tutors come together with our staff to ask questions, find ways to resolve hurdles and learn new approaches to keep students motivated.
ATC Staff Stays Busy

Our Coordinators, Program Advisor and Program Director have worked tirelessly to launch this year’s tutoring programs. They have signed up tutors, written the individualized lesson plans, coordinated pull out times with building staff and teachers, organized reading supplies for each student, and been busy pairing the students with tutors. The Board of Directors extends a round of applause and thanks to ATC staff!
More Dog Walk Fun!

Our Second Annual Dog Walk for Literacy, nicknamed BarkinthePark18, was a financial success. We raised $28,000 from sponsors, donations, and event registrations. Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. Congratulations also go to our social media contest winner, Brian Buran (at left, with company)! Finally, we know you’ve seen photos from our fun day; here’s a quick video about the dog walk produced by T.C. Williams students:
At this time of Thanksgiving, please know how grateful ATC is to have your help, interest and support. Alexandria's children are being raised in a wonderfully caring community, and we have you to thank.
