The morning began with a walk through the wetlands to experience the birds who call the area home, followed by science talks on the power of restoration. As the sun set, we ended our day with a powerful evening performance that touched on themes of climate justice, colonization, and slavery. Each event of the day was an expression of the hope and healing taking place on the land since the final levees were breached in October 2008 to restore the Giacomini Wetlands. The full day felt like a balm, including the appearance of the full moon and Jupiter to conclude the day.
For the casual visitor who strolls through Point Reyes Station and looks out over the Giacomini Wetlands, it is difficult to imagine this was a dairy pasture just 15 years ago. The project restored 613 acres of wetland habitat and 12% of the outer coastal wetlands in Northern California. The partnership between PRNSA, the NPS, and the community was critical to make this project a success.
