Charismatic New Releases from Tenuta delle Terre Nere!

Today we are thrilled to offer you an IMPECCABLE trio of small-batch volcanic wines from Marco de Grazia's Tenuta delle Terre Nere estate on Mount Etna.

We lead off with his 2017 Etna Rosso. Showcasing both power and elegance, this sophisticated wine is an excellent representation to the volcanic reds of Sicily's actively volcanic Mount Etna. Think excellent Bourgogne Rouge or a classic Nebbiolo and you're in the right vicinity, plus there's something unique and hard to describe that makes this wine special. It is filled with character and terroir, wonderfully balanced, a joy to drink by itself or with a meal, and a total steal at $18.99.

We follow with one of Marco's prestigious single-vineyard reds, the 2016 Calderara Sottana. Like the Rosso, it is made from Mount Etna's signature Nerello Mascalese grape, but it is amped up in every dimension. More power, more nuance, more of everything. But still, with that classic Terre Nere balance. Earning a massive 96+ Points from Vinous, this head-turning red drinks like a cross between a 1er Cru Burgundy and a powerful Cru Barolo. At $49.99, our limited supply is sure to disappear in a flash.

Rounding out today's trio is Marco's mineral-driven 2018 Etna Bianco. Compare this to a gorgeous White Priorat or a slatey Chablis. It has the complexity and finesse to engage a sophisticated wine drinker while remaining sufficiently well mannered to serve at a family dinner.

These are extremely well-made, truly singular wines, and they are priced right. Scroll down for the full story,  then quickly click the  Big Yellow Button   to take these volcanic beauties home!

2017 Tenuta delle Terre Nere  Rosso
Etna, Sicily, Italy
Situated on the slopes of the highly active Mount Etna volcano, Tenuta delle Terre Nere is turning out some of the most compelling wines in all of Sicily. They produce a range of single parcel reds, as well as this bottling made from a combination of their prestigious vineyards.

A wine of exceptional character and food-friendliness, the 2017 Etna Rosso exemplifies the nuance, complexity and elegance that make Terre Nere so special.

Offering the balance and nuance of a classic Burgundy along with enticing flavors that are unique to the rugged volcanic terroir, this is one of those wines that really gets us excited. It is already drinking perfectly and will get even better over the next few years.  It also happens to be a rather exceptional value. While Vinous gives the bigger score, it is Wine Advocate who perfectly captures the essence...

"Bright red. Pure nose offers red cherry and raspberry fruit aromas complicated by herbs and minerals. Suave and rather tightly wound, but nicely lifted by salty minerality that accentuates the bright red fruit flavors. Finishes firmly tannic but not drying, with outstanding persistence. Simply a great entry level Etna Rosso. Drink 2019 - 2022."
- 92 Points, Vinous, Ian D'Agata (8/2019)

"The 2017 Etna Rosso is a beautiful wine that manages to effectively communicate both the elegance and the power of this stellar appellation in Sicily. There is also a straightforward or straight-shooting aspect to the wine that adds to its focus and the sharpness of its aromatic delivery. Bright acidity and fine tannins add to that linearity and simplicity. This is 95% Nerello Mascalese with 5% Nerello Cappuccio. The wine is fermented in large oak casks, and it ages in large oak containers for up to 18 months. Drink 2018 - 2028."
- 91 Points, Wine Advocate (12/28/2018)

This wine always sells out fast. Why? Because it's vibrant, tasty, fun to drink and it perfectly complements and enhances a huge range of dishes. Wine Advocate quotes a price $25. Median online retail is $22. We offer it today for a bit less. With Burgundy prices continuing to skyrocket, this one really hits the sweet spot.

2016 Tenuta delle Terre Nere "Calderara Sottana" Rosso
Etna, Sicily, Italy
The Calderara Sottana vineyard houses 50 to 100 year old vines planted in pure, black volcanic pumice. This special site is the stoniest of all the Terre Nere vineyards, forcing these incredibly old vines to struggle and dig deep for water. The reward is in each and every grape that these low yielding vines turn out.

"Let me be crystal-clear: this is one of the two/three best Calderara Sottana wines from Terre Nere ever, and I should know having tasted all of them multiple times over the years."
    - Ian D'Agata, Vinous (8/2019)

In 2016, only 916 cases were produced and the wine is extraordinary. Like a cross between an elegant red Burgundy and a powerful Barolo, the 2016 Calderara Sottana is a knock-out from a dream vintage. Plenty of poetic praise can be found below, leading off with this passionate 96+ Point review from Vinous...

"Moderately saturated brilliant crimson red. Minty and balsamic nuances complement the very elegant aromas of strawberry, red cherry, rose petal, savory herbs and crushed rocks. Clean and fresh yet also very rich and ripe, with a steely core of red/black fruit nicely framed by silky tannins and harmonious acidity. Finishes very suave and smooth, boasting a highly multifaceted and concentrated personality. To put it in perspective, this currently offers more flesh and depth than Terre Nere's also outstanding Etna Rosso Guardiola and San Lorenzo, but also greater steely resolve, a very typical finding in Calderara Sottana, a contrada characterized by extremely poor stony soil. Let me be crystal-clear: this is one of the two/three best Calderara Sottana wines from Terre Nere ever, and I should know having tasted all of them multiple times over the years. Drink 2022 - 2030."
- 96+ Points, Vinous, Ian D'Agata (8/2019)

"Tenuta delle Terre Nere selected three single-vineyard wines that it classifies as Grande Terroir Ellittico; the 2016 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is one of those three wines. The wine does indeed show a higher level of complexity and increased depth that is especially apparent in the mouth. The wine has a firm tannin backbone that bodes very well for its future evolution. This is a crisp, sharp and structured Etna red wine. Nerello Mascalese is blended with 2% Nerello Cappuccio. Some 14,000 bottles were made. Drink 2019 - 2035."
- 94 Points, Wine Advocate (12/28/2018)

The "Luminous" 2018 Etna Bianco!

2018 Tenuta delle Terre Nere  Bianco
Etna, Sicily, Italy
Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel vats, this medium-bodied white is soft and creamy with a round texture, a light-on-its-feet crisp energy and lip-smacking acidity. The aromas burst out of the glass, impersonating baked apples and poached pears lying in a field of white flowers blowing in a warm, salty ocean breeze.

Plenty of stone and mineral tones add complexity with additional flavors of freshly baked pie crust, sprightly citrus fruit and slivered almonds playing a role. We thoroughly enjoyed our sample bottle with chicken cordon bleu. It would also make a great partner to nearly any roasted seafood dish or smoked shellfish.

Terre Nere's 2018 Etna Bianco is a field blend of 70% Carricante, 20% Catarratto, 5% Grecanico and 5% Minnella. The fruit is sourced from old vines on the northern slope of the volcano, with altitude ranging from 600 meters to 900 meters above the sea. How a small-batch, old-vine white blend from an active volcano on the island of Sicily can sell for this price is mind-boggling.

"Luminous medium-dark straw yellow. Aromas and flavors of chamomile and balsamic oils along with hints of pear and minerals on the inviting nose. Enters a little subdued, but finishes very strong and long. This builds on you slowly; think of it more like a marathon runner rather than a 100 yards sprinter. Drinking window: 2019 - 2023."
90 Points, Vinous - Ian d'Agata (6/2019)

If you're not drinking wines like this, you should be! Stash away a few bottles for Thanksgiving and really wow the family and guests.
