Dear Columbus House Community,
It is with a mix of gratitude and fond farewell that we announce the departure of our dedicated CEO, Margaret Middleton, who has been at the helm of Columbus House for nearly four years. Joining us in May 2020, she has led the organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and has steered us towards growth and success. Margaret has chosen to resign to pursue other opportunities effective March 1.
Under Margaret's leadership, Columbus House has achieved remarkable milestones that have left a lasting impact on our mission to serve those experiencing homelessness. Notably, Margaret played a pivotal role in navigating the organization through the uncertainties of the pandemic, ensuring the safety of our clients and staff. We are proud to announce that Columbus House experienced zero deaths attributed to COVID-19 among our clients or team members during those tumultuous years.
Margaret oversaw a substantial 30% revenue growth, propelling our budget from $12+ million in 2020 to a projected $16+ million for Fiscal Year 2024. This growth has enabled us to expand vital programs, including rental subsidies for 41 additional people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Greater New Haven. She also launched the largest capital project in Columbus House’s history. This significant undertaking marks the beginning of a new chapter in shelter care providing greater dignity and a sense of independence among those we serve. Additionally, Margaret and the Columbus House community contributed to successful statewide campaigns that secured $10 million in state funding over the last two years. This funding supports winter emergency shelter operations across the state, ensuring that individuals and families have a place to come in from the cold.
"It has been an honor to serve Columbus House during a critical period in its history,” Margaret said. “The resilience of our clients, the dedication of our staff, and the unwavering support of the community have been the driving forces behind our success."
Matthew Cammarota, Chair of Columbus House's Board, expressed gratitude stating, "Under Margaret’s leadership, Columbus House has continued to lead the state in serving people and families experiencing homelessness. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire us as we move forward."
As Margaret departs, we express our deepest appreciation for her dedicated service and wish her success in her future endeavors. We also wish to applaud the work done by the tireless and committed staff of Columbus House who daily work to improve the lives of the unhoused. The Board is committed to ensuring a seamless transition to new leadership as we maintain our mission to serve those experiencing homelessness.
Sincerely,
