An Inside Look of the...Former Pool

The third feature of An Inside Look is here! We are excited to share details of Third Street Alliance's history, facility, and programs that you may not know about.

Feature 1 gave an overview of our facility and it's history and Feature 2 went in depth about the history of our shelter program, starting with the creation of the Easton Y.W.C.A. (read features 1 & 2 here).

Now we are going to take a closer look into what used to be the pool and its recent transformation.

The Pool

The pool at Third Street Alliance dates back to the organization’s earlier years as the Easton Y.W.C.A. In 1955, a major expansion of the facility added the pool alongside a gymnasium, additional office space, and residential areas.

For decades, the pool served as a hub for community wellness, offering swim lessons and water-based exercise programs through the early 2000s.

Pool to School Transformation

Over time, the cost of maintaining the pool became unsustainable, leading to its decommissioning. After sitting unused for several years, Third Street Alliance chose to reimagine the space in a way that would once again benefit the community. In 2022, plans were announced to transform the former pool into new classrooms for The Learning Center at Third Street Alliance.

The completion of the Pool-to-School expansion brought three new classrooms, created five new jobs, and increased The Learning Center’s capacity by 33 percent.

This new addition, now known as the Welken Wing, was named in honor of Joyce Welken and her family in recognition of their long-standing support of our mission. Joyce’s leadership gift played a key role in bringing the classroom expansion project to life.

The Classrooms Today

The three new classrooms allowed The Learning Center at Third Street Alliance to accommodate more students in the Easton area who need preschool care.

In 2025, 217 students attended The Learning Center with 86% of children having met or exceeded developmental milestones.

Recently, Crayola's Young Professionals painted bright and colorful murals around the Welken Wing for this year's Volunteer Challenge through the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley.

Our vision is for women, children, and families to be connected to community and social networks, achieving positive outcomes including health, social & emotional development, and educational & economic advancement.

For nearly a century, our work has been focused on helping those in our community who need it most. This would not be possible without the generous support of our community.
