We became homeless at the hands of someone who was supposed to love us, protect us, and just be the opposite of what he showed us: my father. So, when we came to Family Promise in September of 2014, we came with nothing besides each other, the clothes on our backs, shoes on our feet, $100 in cash and our mustard seed of faith. It was tough. It was embarrassing, but the staff at Family Promise, as well as everyone in the community who helped out, made our transition and progress one to remember! They made us feel like family and treated us as if we were the most amazing humans on earth. From the respect, motivation, and support to the love and encouragement, I knew God placed us in the right situation/home that would help mold us for our future!
After being at Family Promise for 3 months, we were able to get our own place and start a new life. Now, 10 years later, my boys and I have been very blessed! I am now a Family Nurse Practitioner and Labor and Delivery RN, and I have my own scrub uniform line called “The NP Collection by Shateek.” Jay'Veon turned 18 this year, graduated high school with Honors, went to visit China (he took Chinese as a foreign language for 5 years) and now he is in college to become a hospitalist doctor! Jay'Ven turned 16 this year, is a junior in high school, has already started taking college courses, and wants to become a psychologist.
I always tell Jennifer that we wouldn't be where we are today if it hadn't been for Family Promise. They saw us and treated us how a family should, and still to this day, I feel like we are a part of their family. Sometimes, all someone may need is a chance, and Family Promise gave us just that. I will forever be grateful for Family Promise, and I’m honored to have been a part of The Family who keeps their Promise! Thank you!
