SCA LCA Calculator Webinar

The SCA Lifecycle Assessment Calculator tool has proven beneficial as a resource for designers, contractors and ready mix concrete producers in their efforts to communicate lower carbon options like using slag cement.


In this video, Shawn Kalyn, B.Eng LEED AP BD+C, Technical Services and Sustainability Engineer for Votorantim Cimentos - St Marys Cement and chair of SCA's Technical Marketing Committee, demonstrates how users can use the tool that is based off NRMCA industry EPD and Benchmark information V3.


Viewers will learn where they can download the tool from on the website, the different functions to enter mix and see the environmental impacts like global warming potential and other key indicators used to support lower carbon concrete and other environmental initiatives.

SCA Project Award Winner Spotlight

Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge 


The New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is the largest infrastructure project in DC’s history. The design includes three above deck arches, four pedestrian overlooks and to piers. The project was designed with a 100-year service life. The bridge itself has more than 15,000 cubic yards of concrete and the whole project, which includes the reconstruction of the I‐295 and Suitland Parkway interchange, totals more than 40,000 cubic yards. Due to its unique design, the New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge will be the only bridge of its kind in the world. It is a three arch bridge supported by just two V‐piers in the river.


The top three mixes used in this project were 70 percent slag cement. They included both mass and self-consolidating concrete. In addition to the value engineering aspect, slag cement was specified in the mass mixes for curing stability, and it was specified elsewhere for the aesthetically appealing

lighter color. The use of slag allowed a pour of slabs in excess of 1,200 to 2,200 cubic yards with curing stability and even heat distribution. Slag also contributed to the aesthetic appeal of the finished design.

Slag Cement In Sustainable Concrete Awards Program - Submit Your Project Today!

The SCA has been honoring the exceptional use of slag cement in concrete construction since 2010 with the Slag Cement In Sustainable Concrete Awards Program. Each spring, the SCA holds an awards ceremony to honor the winners and showcase their award winning projects.


The categories awarded are: Architectural, Durability, Infrastructure, High Performance, Innovative Applications, and Lower Carbon Concrete. 


The program also honors research in the field of slag cement in concrete as well. Research winners receive a $1,000 stipend from the SCA.

SCA Slag Cement University

The Slag Cement University is a central source of educational resources on slag cement use in concrete construction for university professors and students. Professors can easily incorporate the content of Slag Cement University into existing construction management course material.

Content was curated and developed by SCA members and staff to provide an overview of the applications, uses, and benefits of slag cement use. Content includes syllabus, exam questions, slide decks, and pre-recorded presentations on various topics.


While the slag cement university platform is a great way to expand your knowledge on slag cement use, this is not a certification program. As with all concrete mixtures, trial batches should be performed to verify concrete properties. Results may vary due to a variety of circumstances, including temperature and mixture components, among other things. You should consult your slag cement professional for assistance. Nothing contained herein shall be considered or construed as a warranty or guarantee, either expressed or implied, including any warranty of fitness for a particular purpose.
