A message from Bishop Shin
Dear Friends,
I write to invite your support for the Episcopal Service Corps, a ministry of the Diocese of New York. The New York Internship Program, which began over a decade ago at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Manhattanville, has now evolved and expanded to Trinity Episcopal Church Morrisania in the Bronx in addition to St. Mary’s with nine fellows beginning in August 2018. And it is now called New York Service and Justice Collaborative (NYSJC). I want to thank its executive director, Ms. Judith Douglas, and the co-chairs, The Rev. Mary Foulke and Ms. Paula Roberts, for their work in the transition and growth of this ministry.
The mission of the NYSJC is “forming spiritually-grounded leaders through community and action for social justice.” The NYSJC hosts post-college young adults who want to live in intentional community, while they are placed in year-long fellowships in community service organizations. At a time when many are looking for more justice and community service, the expansion will allow us to host more young people who are eager to come to New York and serve its communities and the church. It will also allow us to place them in more neighborhoods that need the dedication the fellows bring to their work.
On
Thursday, October 25, 2018, 6:00-9:00 p.m. there will be a "Spirit of Service and Justice" benefit for the NYSJC. The event will be hosted by Church of the Heavenly Rest in their rectory. The event will include a reception and an opportunity to hear more about the program from myself, other program leaders, and most important, the fellows themselves. We are also seeking sponsors for the program - the sponsorship levels are listed below. However you can be involved, whether by sponsoring a fellow, offering a service placement, and/or attending the benefit, we will rejoice in your participation in what is, for many young people, a life-changing experience.
