An Organic California
Cabernet for Just $16.79!

Plus a 95-point Cab from Spring Mountain...

From a perspective of pure drinking enjoyment, the wine we present to you today may turn out to be the best California Cabernet buy of the year. Yes, that's a bold statement, but we are really passionate about this one!

At just $16.79 per bottle, the 2017 Ground Effect Cabernet Sauvignon knocked our socks off. With a legit 90-point rating from the Vin Chicago tasting team, we first introduced  this organically produced Cab two months ago in our February newsletter.

Fast forward to a staff training session two weeks ago at our Elston Avenue store and, once again, we were  blown away by the pure Cabernet flavors and sheer pleasure-giving drinkability of this Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon. At that moment, we knew it merited  the spotlight of a Vin Chicago Big Yellow Button.

We feature this deliciously drinkable, overtly over-delivering California Cabernet today along with the 95-point rated 2015 Spring Mountain Vineyards Cabernet, the most acclaimed release in decades from this mysterious and exciting Napa estate.

2017 Ground Effect  Cabernet Sauvignon
Santa Barbara County, California
Ground Effect is a project of Ryan Roark. Ryan is a farmer first and winemaker second. His goal with Ground Effect is to make a delicious, minimally oak-influenced Cabernet that showcases the terroir of Santa Barbara. And to do so for under $20 per bottle. We think he nailed it.

Crafted entirely from organically grown grapes, mostly from the Happy Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County, this assemblage of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc shows plenty of complexity, with ripe and juicy flavors of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and cassis intermingling with notes of forest floor and a subtle woodsy spice.

The mouthfeel is soft and the body is medium, resulting in a well-balanced, wonderfully easy drinking Cabernet with a long, fruit-driven finish that invites you back for sip after sip.

Enjoy this soft, oh-so-nice Cabernet any night of the week with a wide variety of foods from burgers to tacos to pasta to pizza and, of course, a juicy steak. Or simply pop the cork, pour a glass and sink into your couch with a favorite book or movie. You won't find many California Cabs this delicious and versatile for this low of a price.

The median online price is $20. Our price beats all 24 listings.

A Hot 95-Point Cabernet
from Spring Mountain Vineyards!

2015 Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Spring Mountain, Napa Valley, California
Made up of four historic parcels dating back to the late 1800s, Spring Mountain Vineyard is one of Napa's most unique and notable estates. Their property contains over 800 acres of scenic land on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain, with  225 acres planted to vineyards. The diversity of their extremely low yielding vineyard blocks plays a major role in their ability to produce distinctive, powerful and long-lived mountain grown estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

We had the chance to tour their vast property last year and were blown away to learn just how low the yields are from their old, mountainside vines. Under one ton per acre in many cases. Crazy! We snapped this photo out the window of the vineyard manager's truck. It seems like beautiful scenery and powerful wine so often go hand in hand!

Today we are thrilled to offer their 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. A wine of monumental power, elegance and sophistication, this Cabernet is built for the long haul. Awarding 95-points, Wine Spectator writes...

"Sports an intense and pure beam of raspberry and cassis flavors, flanked by sage, incense and black tea aromas and backed by mouthwatering licorice snap notes and a bramble-filled finish. A beautiful example of mountain fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040."
- 95 Points, Wine Spectator (3/31/2019)

This is an iconic mountain-grown Napa Valley Cabernet to stash in the cellar for enjoyment over the next two decades. A very serious wine here.
